Nearly ten months ago, longtime Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk passed away at the age of 62. Since then, the organization has been searching for a potential suitor to purchase the franchise. League executives believe the price tag could be upwards of $1 billion dollars, if not more, when all is said and done.

Actor Ryan Reynolds, who famously bought soccer club Wrexham AFC, and starred in the beloved documentary “Welcome to Wrexham” has thrown his hat into the ring. However, with the asking price so astronomical, he’s indicated he requires a consortium of people with “really deep pockets” to help aid in the purchase.

There are plenty of other traditional possible owners, like Michael Andlauer, Jeffrey of Michael Kimel and Patrick Dovigi, should the Sens wind up being sold to a more conventional owner. However, the prospect of Reynolds being a part of a management group in a city that he’s spent a lot of time in has fans excited. With the Senators showing signs of turning a corner in their rebuild, a deal is expected to get done by March, or perhaps later.

There’s an intriguing reason why Ryan Reynolds has moved out in front of the pack to be the slight favorite to own one of Canada’s seven NHL franchises. With T-Mobile reportedly considering an acquisition of Mint Mobile, which is partially owned by Reynolds, perhaps that’s a signal towards fantasy becoming reality.

Other Frontrunners To Own Senators

There are other choices that won’t quite make the same headlines, but nonetheless have deep pockets and could secure a deal. That includes Michael Andlauer, who already is the owner of the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and part owner of the Montreal Canadiens. His Andlauer Healthcare Group is valued at $2.2 billion, with his personal share estimated at $1.1 millon.

There’s the brother tag team duo of Jeffrey and Michael Kimel that are tied with Andlauer for the second favorite. They’re co-founders of Harlo Entertainment, with Michael also co-founding Chase Hospitality Group and most recently, he co-founded OverActive Media, which is the only entity worldwide to own three franchised e-sports teams. He also serves as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins management committee, alongside his brother.

Longshot Holding Value

Roger Greenberg at +950 screams value, given that he grew up in Ottawa and is Alternate Governor of the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks. He’s CEO of Minto, a real estate company that’s built over 80,000 homes. A condition in the sale of the Senators is that they must not move to another city, and with his local roots already tied down to the Nation’s Capital, he could swoop in and be the highest bidder.

Best Bet to be Next Senators Owner

It would be a lot of fun to have Ryan Reynolds be a part of an ownership group of the Senators, if for no other reason to bring back some pizzazz for a franchise that has been toiling the last few years. With the success of bringing Wrexham AFC from doormat to solid club, it’d be fascinating to see a Reynolds ownership group do the same.

However, the more likely scenario is Michael Andlauer takes control of the Senators. He already owns a hockey club, and is part owner of the Canadiens so he’s intimately familiar with the NHL and the landscape.

Pick: Michael Andlauer To Be Next Ottawa Senators Owner (+245)
