In the world of Royal news, this week was kind of a big deal. After all, it’s not every day someone in the UK’s first family decides to opt-out.

But this week, that’s exactly what happened. The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, and wife Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex, announced via social media and on their official website that things were about to change.

The lengthy Instagram announcement detailed the difficult but ultimate decision the pair made to “Step back as ‘Senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent.” Um, excuse us? That’s pretty amazing and admirable.

So, what is next for Harry and Meghan as they venture off into the great unknown and plan for a future in which literally anything is their proverbial oyster?

The Man for the Job

Imagining Prince Harry in the workforce isn’t actually too hard at all to picture. The Duke’s history of involvement with the British Army is enough history to show that he’s willing to get his hands dirty.

Presently, the couple’s income is all provided by Harry’s father Charles’s estate, known as Duchy of Cornwall. It is speculated Harry and Meghan’s lifestyle is at least relatively lavish and it would be difficult for the pair to continue the same lifestyle solely with their own funding.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA

Harry will have no shortage of opportunities to help make this happen, though. His options for writing a book or contributing to a publication are quite likely and would bring in a good amount of income.

British public figures are well known for their general agreement to participate in reality programming, and it’s heavily likely the options for doing so will present themselves rather quickly. But Harry’s decision to step away from the Monarchy shows a desire to be out of the public eye so it’s more likely to see him step behind the scenes.

Can you imagine the inspiration Harry would have in producing content behind the scenes for a goliath like Netflix? The possibilities are endless.

Pick: Netflix Producer (+275)

Will Queen Elizabeth Strip Harry and Meghan of Their Royal Titles in 2020?

Outcome Odds
Yes +250
No -400

A Royal Decision

Then there’s the matter of whether or not Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will strip Harry and Meghan of their royal titles. Will the couple still remain known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?

Titles of the Royal family are considered a serious matter. Previously, Harry’s mother Diana lost her Princess of Wales title after her 1996 divorce with Prince Charles. But title issues go back much earlier than this. In 1936, Kind Edward VIII had to abdicate the throne after he married American socialite Wallis Simpson.

And, of course, Prince Andrew was brought under the public magnifying glass after intense public scrutiny about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and vacated many of his royal duties. But still, he’s called a Prince regardless of that drama.

Queen Elizabeth has been close with Harry since his birth and connected with him and his brother following their mother’s tragic death. Elizabeth and Harry’s bond will likely be enough reason for The Queen to let Harry and Meghan retain their titles.

Pick: No (-400)
