  • The Reds beat Pep Guardiola’s side 3-1 on Sunday
  • Both Salah and Mane bagged a goal apiece
  • Liverpool now has a nine-point lead over Man City in the Premier League table

After Liverpool’s latest victory over Manchester City on Sunday, they now look like clear-cut favorites to win their first Premier League title since the 1989/90 season. Despite Man City having 55-percent of the possession in the game, Liverpool’s front three were clinical at the most important times, with goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. Fabinho got the scoring going early on with an absolute screamer from outside the 18-yard box.

Back in October, the Reds were -150 favorites to win the title in 2020, but after this vital win that puts them nine points ahead of City, and has shortened their average EPL odds to -250.

Chelsea and Leicester City are both currently tied for second a point ahead of Manchester City, but with a lot of matches left, City are still heavy favorites to finish in second above the Blues and Foxes.

There were two questionable handballs that weren’t called in this heavyweight clash between City and Liverpool, leaving Pep Guardiola fuming. But in the end, the Reds were clinical with their chances and City were not.

Liverpool in Top Form This Term

Jurgen Klopp’s side has been absolutely unstoppable this year, going unbeaten in the Premier League through 12 matches and having lost just once all year throughout all competitions, a defeat to Napoli in the group stage of Champions League competition. The UCL title-holders are definitely looking like the team to now win England’s most prized trophy this season. From Ballon d’Or favorite Virgil van Dijk patrolling their back-line to one of Europe’s most talented attacking lines with Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, and Roberto Firmino, this side has many weapons that can hurt their opponents at any given moment.

This match was relatively even in many ways, with City having more shots than Liverpool. But the Reds took advantage of their chances and were very good at containing the likes of Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero in the final third. Fabinho got the Reds on the scoresheet in just the sixth minute, with a world-class long-range effort.

Manchester City Defensive Woes Continue

City is coming off a rough week, where they tied Serie A side Atalanta 1-1 on Wednesday in the Champions League and then this latest defeat by the hands of Liverpool has only made matters worse. Scoring hasn’t been the issue for the defending EPL champions who have bagged a league-leading 35 goals, it’s been the lack of solidity on their backline.

They have lost three times this year, with two of those defeats coming from Wolverhampton and Norwich City. John Stones has been lackluster this term for City, while Kyle Walker and Fernandinho haven’t been very solid either. They were constantly exposed at Anfield by Liverpool’s front three, despite the controversial VAR calls that should have been handballs in favor of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool Won’t Blow Nine-Point Lead

Even though we’re just 12 matches into the 2019/20 campaign, a nine-point gap is huge at this point. Liverpool would have to lose three times but given the quality of their squad, it’s not going to happen. It’s definitely looking like it’s going to be the Reds year to win a Premier League title. Man for man, City are just as talented as the Reds, but their disappointing start is going to hurt them when it comes to chasing their third consecutive EPL title.
