Ajax on Cloud Nine

Ajax comes into this game on cloud nine after a thrilling 4-0 midweek win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Goals from Daley Blind, Antony and Sebastien Haller and an own goal from Marco Reus gave the Dutch an outstanding win against one of Europe’s giants. They now have complete control of Group C with three wins out of three and already look well set for a place in the knockout phase.

In the Eredivisie, they have a slender one-point lead at the top courtesy of an impressive 7-1-1 record, with their only defeat of the campaign coming in round 7 when they were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by Utrecht. That was a blip though in what has otherwise been an outstanding first couple of months of the season, with the only other dropped points coming on Matchday 2 when they drew with Twente.

The Ajax Production Line

The Dutch champions – who are now chasing their 36th title – look to have produced another quality team loaded with young players who have come through their academy; a trait that is very much part of the Ajax ethos. Top-quality, well-coached youngsters are brought through the various levels until they are ready for first-team soccer and then the really good ones are sold, and the cycle continues.

Judging by the BVB result, this current crop looks to have the potential to be up there with the very best Ajax teams and has been supplemented with quality signings, like the experienced Dusan Tadic and leading scorer Haller. A key stat to note is that for all this team’s attacking talent, they have conceded just two goals in the Eredivisie this season.

PSV in the Ajax Shadow

While PSV has long been in the shadow of Ajax, it is a club that has enjoyed success in its own right, both domestically and in Europe. They have 24 Eredivisie titles to their name – the most recent in 2017-18 – and after having made such an impressive start to this campaign they will believe another title is within their grasp. A win here would be a bona fide statement of intent and a massive boost to their confidence.

In last season’s Eredivisie, they were again Ajax’s main challengers, albeit finishing the season 16 points behind the champions. Their second place was enough to earn them a place in the qualifying stage of this season’s Champions League although they crashed out in a two-legged eliminator with Benfica. As a result, they went into the Europa League and currently sit third in Group B.

Flying Start for PSV

It is their domestic form that stands out though with seven wins from their nine league games so far and just two defeats. They opened the campaign with four straight wins which set the tone nicely for what was to follow; this run included an excellent 3-0 away win over AZ Alkmaar. That run was ended with a surprise 4-0 home defeat by Feyenoord but this proved nothing more than a blip.

While PSV’s defensive record does not compare to Ajax’s – they have conceded 12 in their nine games – they have been very potent in attack, scoring 22 goals so far, with the veteran Israeli striker Eran Zahavi their go-to attacker.

Ajax vs PSV Prediction

Ajax unsurprisingly starts as odds-on favorites and will be bursting full of confidence after the BVB win but this will be a very different game. PSV coach Roger Schmidt will have his team set up to be solid rather than going toe-to-toe with the champions and so it may be a tighter, edgier game than many are expecting.

It is however hard to see PSV shutting Ajax out for the full 90+ minutes, so the value here is in a fairly low-scoring home win.

Pick: Ajax to win 2-0 (+850)
