Wanda Metropolitano will be the scene on Wednesday as Group B runners-up Atletico Madrid welcome English giants Manchester United to the Spanish capital for a tantalizing Champions League Round of 16 fixture. The kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM EST.
Atleti squeezed into the knockout stages by the skin of their teeth after running out as 3-1 winners on Matchday 6 against Porto. As for the Red Devils, they won Group F, grabbing 11 of a possible 18 points.
This will be the first meeting ever between Atletico and United in Europe’s most prized competition, having only clashed in 1991 across two legs in the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, a tournament that no longer exists.

Atletico Not in the Best Form
The La Liga title-holders have taken a significant step back this term after winning the Spanish top flight last season. While they are coming off a 3-0 routing of Osasuna on the weekend, Diego Simeone’s men are a whole 15 points off league leaders Real Madrid and currently sit outside of the top four. Atletico was rather unimpressive on the group stages of the Champions League as well, winning just two of their six fixtures.
📊| The last time Atlético Madrid won 2+ games in a row was in January 2 and 6, 2022.
The wins came against Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga and Rayo Majadahonda in the Copa del Rey.

Los Colchoneros captured a measly seven points, with their only victories coming against AC Milan and Porto, who both heavily disappointed as Liverpool ran away with top spot in the pod. The UCL could be their only realistic shot at a piece of silverware in 2022 given their poor form domestically, having also crashed out of the Copa del Rey already, too.

There may also be some major changes in Simeone’s lineup on Wednesday, with the Argentine reportedly opting to use Joao Felix and Angel Correa as a strike duo in training on Monday, while Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Koke were all nowhere to be seen in the starting XI.
United Enjoying Unbeaten Run
The Red Devils have dealt with their fair share of problems in 2021/22, but they’ve improved their form across the last month and a half. While there are several draws during this span, Ralf Rangnick’s side is riding a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Their only loss since the turn of the year was in FA Cup to Middlesborough, where the Championship outfit beat them in penalties.

In the Champions League, Man United showed well in the group phase, securing wins over Villarreal on two occasions and Atalanta. Europe is also where Cristiano Ronaldo has thrived the most, netting six times in five appearances.
Cristiano Ronaldo's record against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League is insane. What's your gut saying, do you think he'll score on Wednesday night and take us to the Quarter Finals over the 2 legs?#mufc pic.twitter.com/ORhQ6K8Fn1

United is fresh off a dominant 4-2 victory over Leeds on Sunday as four different players found the scoresheet. While the Red Devils did initially blow a 2-0 lead, Fred and youngster Anthony Elanga fired back with two fine finishes to hand their side a vital three points and send them comfortably into the top-four. The visitors head into Wednesday’s fixture with a rather clean bill of health as well, which is a great sign for an integral first leg on the road.

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Prediction
Although there’s little history between these two European giants, United is playing much better football than Atletico at the moment. Also, the hosts have lost four in a row to English oppositions in the Champions League. On top of that, Ronaldo is absolutely lethal against his former rivals, scoring 25 goals in 35 appearances. Take the visitors on the moneyline and the Portuguese international to find the back of the net.
Pick: Manchester United (+210), Cristiano Ronaldo to Score (+185)
