It’s a heavyweight battle on Sunday in La Liga as Barcelona host title-holders Atletico Madrid on matchday 23. The kick-off is scheduled for 10:15am ET at the historic Camp Nou.

This will be the first game for both sides since the two-week international break, who rank top-4 in the latest 2022 La Liga odds.

Barca, who just concluded some fine business in the January transfer window, are unbeaten in their last five appearances and most recently took out Alaves on January 23rd by a goal, thanks to a late winner from midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

As for Atleti, they also won on matchday 22, beating Valencia 3-2 in a goal-filled thriller.

The Catalans will be looking for revenge here after tasting defeat in October at Wanda Metropolitano in the reverse fixture.

Can Barcelona End Poor Spell Against Atleti?

Barca currently finds themselves in fifth place and just a point behind Atletico for the final Champions League spot. While a victory would be ideal here, they’ve had little success against their Madrid foes, going winless in the last five meetings while losing on three occasions. In the process, Xavi’s side has scored just four times.

That being said, Blaugrana should head into this match with no shortage of confidence given their recent run, going 3-2-0 in their previous five league appearances, which has helped their La Liga odds. Although the victories weren’t exactly against any tough opponents, it’s always a huge positive to find results. It will certainly play a part in finding another one against a tough Atletico team.

Also, there are reports that Xavi plans to start three of his January signings up top in former Premier League standouts Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adama Traore, and Ferran Torres. That’s a whole lot of pace for the visitors to deal with and if that is the case, it will be very exciting to see if Barca can create some havoc. Nevertheless, the Catalans have no shortage of attacking options to choose from.

Atletico Taking a Step Back

After edging out Real Madrid for the La Liga title last term, Diego Simeone’s men have taken a significant step back. They’re a whole 14 points behind Los Blancos for top spot but have improved slightly across the last month, going 3-1-1 across all competitions. Prior to that, however, Atletico lost three league games in a row.

Last time out, Los Colchoneros secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Valencia on home soil in true comeback fashion. The visitors were two goals to the good by halftime until Simeone’s group stormed back in the second period with three unanswered, capped off by a pair of injury-time goals from Angel Correa and Hermoso. Although it wasn’t convincing, this was the type of result Atletico needed.

It’s clear they’ve played well against Barca, but the title-holders have a distraught 4-3-4 record on the road. They’ve also conceded eight goals in their last four La Liga fixtures away from Wanda Metropolitano, losing three times.

Nevertheless, their recent success versus their arch-rivals will undoubtedly be motivation to grab a crucial three points.

Atletico is set to be without three key players though in Geoffrey Kondogbia, Antoine Griezmann, and Marcos Llorente due to injury.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Prediction

While Barca is in better form, Atleti typically shows up when it comes time for this type of big fixture. However, I do think you’re going to see them play a cagey affair and settle for a point apiece. Given the trends in recent meetings, the under holds value as well.
