Unhappy Time for Besiktas

The season has been a miserable one so far for Besiktas who find themselves struggling in both the Turkish Super Lig and the Champions League. In Group C of the UCL, they have lost four out of four, and in their domestic league, they sit a lowly ninth having lost five of their 13 games.

But, while they remain in touch of the top four of the Super Lig, they have only pride left to play for in Europe with even third place and a place in the Europa League looking a near impossibility.

Their terrible run of form continued at the weekend when they suffered another defeat; this time a 2-0  reversal against fourth-placed Alanyaspor. While, as mentioned above, they are currently still within reach of a Europa League place for next season, the chances of Sergen Yalcin’s side retaining their Turkish title have long gone, with 13 points separating them from the current leaders, Trabzonspor.

Confidence Boosting Win?

In all competitions, Besiktas has lost seven of their last 10, and that includes heavy back-to-back UCL defeats against Sporting Lisbon (4-1 and 4-0), which effectively ended their involvement in European this season. Their record in the UCL is among the worst in the competition, with only Malmo losing four out of four and only RB Leipzig conceding more goals – 13 compared to Besiktas’ 12.

Yalcin will, however, be hoping to see some fight and resilience from his men, with a result against Ajax, whatever the circumstances, always good for the confidence, especially in front of a home crowd.

Top of Eredivisie and Group C

While the season has been a problematic one for the hosts, for Ajax it has been the total opposite. Not only do they sit atop Group C with maximum points, but they are also top of the Eredivisie with 30 points from their 13 games. They have not lost a game since early October –  a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Utrecht on Matchday 7 of the Eredivisie – but other than that, it has been plain sailing for the Amsterdam team.

They have been full of goals, both domestically and in Europe, with their most recent big win coming at the weekend when they hammered RKC Waalwijk 5-0 to stay level on points at the top of the league with PSV.  On the day the goals came from Sebastian Haller (2), Steven Berghuis (2), and Jurrien Timber, but Erik ten Hag’s team has goalscorers all over his squad, with the goals having been shared around.

Unbeaten Away in 29

Ajax’s only other defeat of the season came back in August when they were surprisingly beaten 4-0  in the Dutch Super Cup by PSV, but since then they have lost just once in 16 matches, and have scored a whopping 56 times while conceding just four.

A win for Ajax in Istanbul would make them only the second Dutch side to win their opening five games of a European competition – Feyenoord being the first back in 1971-72 – and worth noting too is that they are currently unbeaten in 29 away games across all competitions.  It all adds up to a huge task for Besiktas.

Besiktas vs Ajax Prediction

There is little here to suggest anything other than an Ajax win but a feisty crowd in Vodafone Park will ensure the Turkish champions give everything in search of at least a point. It is hard though to see a noisy boisterous crowd being enough to bridge the gulf in quality, and the question here is really, how many will Ajax win by.

Given the number of goals the visitors have scored in the last two months, I expect a very busy night for the Besiktas defense.

Pick: Ajax to win by three goals (+390)
