Borussia Dortmund will be looking to bounce back from a shocking mid-week defeat in Europa on Sunday as they welcome Borussia Monchengladbach to Signal Iduna Park for an important clash. The kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 AM EST.

The Black and Yellows might have lost on Thursday, but they did secure a convincing 3-0 victory last weekend against Union Berlin. Gladbach meanwhile, beat Augsburg on Matchday 22 but still remain in 13th spot in what has been an extremely underwhelming campaign.

The visitors did hold the edge in the reverse fixture in September, running out as 1-0 winners against Dortmund on home soil thanks to a first-half goal from Denis Zakaria, who is now a Juventus player.

Dortmund is a -157 favorite here and the over has only been hit in one of the last nine meetings between the two rivals.

Their Bundesliga Odds remain at +1400, with Bayern the clear favorite.

Haaland Expected to be Out Again

The absence of Erling Haaland has seriously hurt BVB, with their talisman missing the last three games. Unfortunately, he’s in a race with time to be fit for Sunday, but all signs point to the Norwegian being sidelined once again, which is certainly a blow to Marco Rose’s attack.

Dortmund will be looking to respond with a vengeance here as well. Rangers absolutely ran riot on them just two days ago, with the Scottish standouts putting four past the hosts in a shocking 4-2 result in the first leg of the Round of 16 playoffs. Coming into this clash, the Black and Yellows have now lost two of their last three games, previously tasting a 5-2 defeat on Matchday 21 against Bayer Leverkusen before the win against Berlin.

While Gladbach is extremely vulnerable this term, Dortmund has lost two in a row to them. However, the hosts thrive at home, going 9-0-2. With Haaland unavailable, Donyell Malen will be leading the line with Marco Reus and Julian Brandt. Reus bagged a double vs. Union last weekend and is going to be relied upon to break down a Monchengladbach backline who have conceded 40 times, one of the worst totals in the Bundesliga.

Gladbach Need a Result

Although Adi Hutter’s side did manage to grab a much-needed three points last time out, they were on a four-game winless run prior, including three straight losses. Aside from a surprising victory over title-holders Bayern, there isn’t much to be happy about for Gladbach this season. The club is a whole eight points off a European spot and struggles on the road, posting a 2-3-6 record.

The performance against Augsburg was certainly promising though and a step in the right direction. Alassane Plea swung in a lovely cross onto Kouadio Kone’s head in the 30th minute before leading scorer Jonas Hoffman put his squad two goals to the good just after the halftime whistle. Augsburg managed to split the lead in half but the hosts added a third in the 67th minute. While Gladbach did concede again in injury time, they managed to hold on.

Hutter’s group has certainly been poor away from home in 2021/22, but the side hasn’t lost in three straight Bundesliga appearances on the road, including that win against Bayern. Given their recent success vs. Dortmund, Monchengladbach will be extremely hopeful a positive result can be secured.

Dortmund vs Monchengladbach Prediction

There’s no doubt Gladbach has Dortmund’s number, despite their placing in the table. With Haaland out, I don’t think the hosts will have that same attacking punch up top. While the likes of Reus and Malen are capable of creating enough havoc to score key goals, you also can’t count out the visitors after a respectable display against Augsburg. I personally think each team is going to take away a lone point here in a hard-fought draw.
