French giants Lyon has seen their reign in the Women’s Champions League finally come to an end. They’ve previously won five years in a row, but the defending champions crashed out at the quarterfinals stage of this campaign after losing to PSG.

Therefore, we’ll have two brand new teams playing for all the marbles on Sunday, with Chelsea and Barcelona locking horns. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM EST.

The Blues are making their first appearance in a UCL final, while Barca lost on the big stage in 2019 to Lyon.

History For Chelsea

After the Chelsea men beat Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals, they made history by joining their women in being the first club ever to have both squads advance to the UCL final in the same year.

If Emma Hayes’ side can win it all, it would also be a huge milestone because no team has ever won on the women’s and men’s side in this competition. The Blues are currently flying high ahead of Sunday’s clash, having tasted defeat just once in their last six matches.

Chelsea has looked extremely convincing up to this stage, knocking out Bayern Munich in the semifinals, 5-3 on aggregate. They outscored their opponents 16-1 in the previous three rounds, destroying the likes of Benfica, Atletico, and Wolfsburg.

The Blues have already captured hardware this term as well. They won the Women’s Super League, just beating out Manchester City by two points. In the process, Chelsea scored an impressive 69 goals in 22 appearances while conceding a measly 10 times. The English giants also fired six past Bristol City in March to lift the FA Women’s League Cup for the second straight year.

Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby are key to the Blues’ attack. The strike duo has been deployed up top in some massive clashes this season and will likely feature alongside one another on Sunday. Kirby currently leads the side with six Champions League goals to her name, while Kerr has bagged four.

Another Chance at Glory For Barca

Barcelona got their hearts broken two years ago in Budapest after falling 4-1 to Lyon. However, this is another chance at European glory. Just like their English opponents, the Catalans are in good form. Lluis Cortes’ side is unbeaten in six and has already won Spain’s top flight, going a perfect 26-0-0 in the process.

As for UCL play, Barca continues to improve every year. They’ve reached the quarterfinals stage at the minimum in five straight seasons and managed to knock out PSG in the last four of the 2020/21 campaign. Prior, the Spaniards ran through PSV Eindhoven, Fortuna Hjørring, and Man City.

The Primera Division was no match for them, scoring a ridiculous 128 goals in 26 games and allowing just five. Clearly, though, the lack of competition back in their homeland is evident. Their semifinal victory across two legs against Paris was extremely close, just edging out the French by a 3-2 scoreline.

Jenni Hermoso and Asisat Oshoala have combined for 102 goals across the last two seasons, with Hermoso netting six times in Europe this term. Cortes truly has a wide array of attackers to choose from, with the likes of Caroline Graham Hansen and Alexia Putellas more than capable of creating havoc in the final third as well.

Prediction

Despite Barca listed as a heavy favorite here, I think this is going to be a very close match. Each team is playing tremendous football lately and Chelsea is likely hungry to grab another piece of silverware.

They’re both rock solid at the back and lethal going forward. However, you can expect goals to be scored. Barcelona is practically unstoppable in front of net with Hermoso leading the way, while the Blues have a very threatening duo in Kerr and Kirby.

In the end, though, the 2019 finalists will capture their first-ever Champions League trophy and just edge out Chelsea.

Pick: Barcelona (-125), Over 2.5 Goals (-121)
