It’s Costa Rica vs Germany on Thursday, December 1 in the final round of Group E fixtures in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It all kicks off in the Al Bayt Stadium at 2pm ET.

Third plays fourth but both sides are still in with a chance of making it to the last 16. Germany’s only point so far came as a result of a late equalizer against Spain, while Costa Rica responded to their 7-0 thrashing by Spain with an outstanding win over Japan.

We preview Costa Rica vs Germany, look at the World Cup odds, and offer some analysis, team news, and picks below.

Over/Under and Spread

DraftKings are expecting a goal-fest with over 4.5 goals listed at only +180. The under is much less generously priced at -225. If you agree with DraftKings and are expecting a big German win, then the +180 is well worth a second look.

Costa Rica vs Germany Preview

In an incredible turnaround, in the space of just four days, Costa Rica went from being on the receiving end of a 7-0 hammering by Spain to beating Japan 1-0, who themselves beat Germany 2-1 on opening day. The upshot is that a win here for Costa Rica will secure their place in the last 16.

Worth noting is that a draw would also be enough for Luis Fernando Suarez’s team in the unlikely event of the Japanese beating Spain in a game that’s played simultaneously. In reality though, they need to beat the Germans for the first time ever.

Back-To-Back Wins for the Costa Ricans?

We have to go back to the 2014 World Cup to find the last and only time Costa Rica won consecutive games at the finals – a tournament in which six of the current squad were involved. So, while won’t lack experience here, they may lack legs – something that’s badly needed against a physical and relentless German outfit.

A Lifeline Provided by Fullkrug

The Germans’ hopes of progression looked almost dead and buried as the clock tick 82 minutes in their game against Spain, but Niclas Fullkrug’s late equalizer afforded them an unlikely World Cup lifeline. They’re now still alive in the tournament and a win here, coupled with a Spain win against Japan, will see them through to the last 16.

In fairness, the Germans’ second-half performance in game 2 was worthy of a point, especially after they had an Antonio Rudiger goal ruled out in the first half for an offside, and was in stark contrast to their miserable 2-1 defeat by Japan on matchday 1.

Flick Under Huge Pressure

If Japan are able to manage a draw against Spain, then Germany will have to win this game by two clear goals, and if Hajime Moriyasu’s team can do to the Spanish what they did to the Germans, Hansi Flicks’ team would need a five-goal swing in their favor to progress.

So it’s all well and truly on the line and if they fail to make the last 16, Flick will suffer the ignominy of being the first-ever German coach to not win any of his opening three games at the World Cup finals.

Costa Rica vs Germany Prediction

It would take an upset of extraordinary proportions for Costa Rica to pull off a win here, but I’m not expecting them to make it easy for the Germans.

Flick’s team may require patience but I’m expecting their extra quality and physicality to eventually see them through to a two-goal victory.

Pick: Germany to win (-900) / Germany to win 2-0 (+700)
