Costa Rica Outlook

Costa Rica finds itself in must-win mode as they prepare for their Matchday 8 clash with Honduras. Last week’s loss to Canada has dealt a severe blow to the Ticos’ hopes of making a third straight appearance in the FIFA World Cup. The defeat dumps the Costa Ricans win-draw-loss record in CONCACAF Octagonal play to 1-3-3 and leaves them lagging five points back of fourth-place Panama as the third round of qualifying passes the midway points.

Overall, last month’s 2-1 victory over El Salvador in Matchday 5 action marks the Ticos’ only victory since being bounced from the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier this year.

Scoring has come at a premium for Costa Rica during their current slide, with the side tallying just four total goals over their past nine outings. However, Costa Rica has also been effective at repelling opposing shooters, surrendering just six total goals through their first seven octagon clashes.

As result, just two of the Ticos’ first seven contests have produced more than two total goals. However, the Ticos will be without Keylor Navas on Tuesday as he recovers from injury. The veteran goalkeeper and Ticos team captain has surrendered just five total goals in six appearances during the current World Cup qualifying cycle.

Honduras Outlook

Things went from bad to worse for Honduras in Matchday 7 action. Posed to pick up their first win in CONCACAF octagonal play after marching out to a 2-0 lead over Panama, the Catrachos quickly gave up three goals in a span of just eight minutes on their way to a 3-2 loss to the Canaleros.

The defeat extended what is quickly becoming an epic slide for Honduras, who no sport a dismal 0-3-3 record in qualifying play, and are winless in their past nine across all competitions.

Despite coming up short yet again in last week’s clash, the Catrachos’ fast start provides a glimmer of hope for a squad that had been blanked in four of their previous five qualifying matchups, and in six of their previous eight overall.

However, it is far from certain that Honduras can shut down Costa Rica’s attack despite their recent inability to score. The Hondurans have now surrendered three or more goals in three of their past five outings, and 11 total during that stretch. Their recent track record against Costa Rica is also cause for concern, with the Catrachos going winless in six dates with the Ticos since 2011.

The Picks: Costa Rica -135; Under 2.5 (+200); Costa Rica to win by one goal (+175)
