Cruz Azul Powering Streak with Late-Match Heroics

Cruz Azul needed a goal in injury time to eke out a narrow 1-0 win over Pumas UNAM last weekend. Jonathan Rodriguez bagged the winner in controversial fashion, scoring on  a penalty shot with just seconds to spare to seal the victory.

La Máquina also needed second-half markers in each of their two preceding matches, both of which ended with 1-0 wins. Those late-game heroics come in stark contrast to the club’s offensive exploits in their three previous outings, with Cruz Azul shooters opening the scoring inside the first seven minutes in each of those matches.

Rodriguez Poised to Fill the Net?

Fans of La Máquina are now hoping that Rodriguez has recaptured the torrid form of early in the 2020/2021 campaign. The Uruguayan star found the back of the net 10 times through the first 10 matches of the club’s Apertura schedule, but has scored just three times in eight appearances to date in Clausura play.

While the Cruz Azul offense has gotten off to slow starts in recent contests, a stingy defense has largely made up for it. The club has surrendered just five total goals through the first 10 Clausura dates.  However, four of those markers were scored over their first four home matches to date.

Monterrey on a Roll Despite Uneven Road Results

CF Monterrey will be aiming to close the gap on the top of the table on Sunday night. While the Rayados have managed to avoid defeat in recent contests, they missed a golden opportunity to gain valuable ground on first-place Cruz Azul with Wednesday’s draw vs Leon. Like La Máquina, Monterrey have fueled their rise on the table with frustrating defense, allowing just a single goal in each of their past six outings.

The Rayados have produced mixed results on the road since the Clausura schedule kicked off. The club marched to a crushing 6-1 victory over Juarez in their most recent road match, on March 3rd, after recording just a single goal during a preceding 1-1-1 run.

Funes Mori Powering Attack

The Monterrey offense has also leaned heavily on Rogelio Funes Mori for scoring of late. The Argentinian forward has potted five total goals in three outings so far this month, but his focus could understandably be elsewhere after he and his family were held at gunpoint while his home was robbed last weekend.

Monterrey will likely need Funes Mori’s attention to be squarely on the pitch if they are to extend their recent dominance over Cruz Azul. The club has earned at least a point in each of their past three dates with La Máquina, capped by a 1-0 win on home turf last October. However, they have failed to post a win over Cruz Azul in 12 road clashes since 2009.

The Picks: Cruz Azul to win (+120); UNDER 2.5 (-130)
