The Euro 2020 tournament is finally kicking off on Friday with a full slate of games for the weekend. On Saturday, Denmark kicks off their summer campaign with a must-win match against Finland. The fixture is the first being played in Group B, also featuring Belgium and Russia. As Kevin De Bruyne’s Belgium are favorites to win the group, the last spot is up for grabs amongst the other three sides.

Denmark is surely the favorite for second place, as their last loss came all the way back in November. Coincidentally, that was also against Roberto Martinez’s Belgium. Assuming Denmark will drop points in that future match, it makes their games against Finland and Russia all the more important to get out of the group. For reference, in Euro 2020, the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout rounds, as well as the four best third-place sides across all groups.

Additionally, what makes this particular match interesting is that these sides hardly have any recent history between each other. The last time they met was all the way back in 2011 in an international friendly. One of the goal scorers was former Liverpool defender, Daniel Agger, which displays how drastically these sides have changed. Before 2011, these sides had met 58 times, with Denmark winning 37 times.

Denmark’s Defense Bodes Well Against Finland

As a side looking to advance past the group stage for the first time since 2004, this Danish side has something to prove. One part of their squad that will bolster their chances against Finland is their defense. In their last five matches together, Denmark’s defense has held four clean sheets. The lone goal that was scored against them came from the foot of Florian Neuhaus in a one-all draw to Germany.

Denmark vs Finland Statistics

11.8 Shots per game 9.4

Denmark’s defense includes the likes of Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, one of the best shot stoppers in Europe. The 34 year-old held 11 clean sheets in the Premier League this season with no errors leading to a goal, and topped it off with a clean sheet in the FA Cup Final versus Chelsea. In front of him sits a center-half partnership of Andreas Christensen and Simon Kjaer, who have played well together. They will be tasked with stopping Finnish attacker Teemu Pukki, who netted 31 goals this season in all competitions.

Furthermore, Denmark becomes even more refined in their midfield. The likes of Thomas Delaney, Pierre-Emilie Hojbjerg and Christian Eriksen will make it very hard for Finland come Saturday afternoon. In the attack, expect Martin Braithwaite to do most of the damage for the Danes.

Finland Looks to Impress in Their First Euro Competition

Firstly, no matter how this match or the tournament plays out, hats off to Finland for making it this far. This is the first time they will be represented at the tournament, making it all the more special for their players and fans. They will be playing with that extra chip on their shoulder, especially in the first game against Denmark.

With that being said, it will be a hard task to fulfill nonetheless. Most of the pressure will be put onto the shoulders of Norwich City’s Pukki, a truly special talent that can make nothing into something whenever he touches the ball. He has been battling a recent ankle injury, but is still expected to play for Finland.

Denmark vs Finland Best Bet

The best bet for this match is Denmark -1.5 with odds of +133. This bet has great value in a match where Denmark really overpowers their opponents on paper. The Danes have played well throughout the year and it really looks like this could be the start of a very successful Euro 2020 campaign for them. For Finland, this match could turn into damage control very quickly.

Pick: Denmark -1.5 (+133)
