Canada has the opportunity to be the first country in CONCACAF to book their ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Wednesday as they visit El Salvador in the capital city of San Salvador. The kick-off is scheduled for 9:00 PM EST at the Estadio Cuscatlan.
The Canadians remain unbeaten in qualifying, having secured a heroic 2-0 victory over the USA on Sunday in front of their home fans in Hamilton. As for El Salvador, they beat Honduras by the same scoreline.
The last meeting between these two sides saw the Canucks run out as 3-0 winners on home soil on September 8th thanks to goals from Atiba Hutchinson, Tajon Buchanan, and Jonathan David.

ÂEl Salvador Riding Some Confidence
Hugo Perez’s men aren’t sitting all that pretty in qualifying with just nine points through 10 matches, which puts them in sixth spot. However, their win over Honduras should undoubtedly give the side some much-needed confidence for an extremely tough clash with the Canadians.

While the Hondurans controlled most of the ball on Sunday in San Pedro Sula, El Salvador was the more clinical team. Nelson Bonilla bagged his first goal of qualifying in the 35th minute for the visitors before Darwin Ceren added insurance in injury time to give Perez’s squad just their second win thus far.
Bryan Landaverde one of El Salvador’s best players will not be available vs #CanMNT due to yellow card accumulation. Neither will Steven Vitoria for Canada.

However, El Salvador failed to collect a victory in eight games across all competitions prior to that, losing six times and drawing twice. Their chances of actually finishing within the top three and qualifying for Qatar are next to none, but they can play spoiler here and make Canada wait a little bit longer to secure their first World Cup berth since 1986. It doesn’t help that midfield mainstay Bryan Landaverde is unavailable due to yellow card accumulation, though.

Canada on the Brink of History
The Canucks could see themselves receiving a formal invite to Qatar following Wednesday’s fixture, but it’s not that simple. Canada would have to win while hoping the US loses Honduras, Mexico beats Panama, and Costa Rica either draws or tastes defeat against Jamaica. Needless to say, a lot of things need to go right. But, the full three points here are going to take them closer to making history during the next international break in March.

John Herdman’s group remains the only team in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying that has yet to lose a game, going 6-4-0 thus far while securing five wins in a row. But, their most recent victory against the States was the sweetest of them all. Canada absolutely ran riot on their North American rivals, with Cyle Larin clinically putting away a phenomenal team goal within the first 10 minutes to get things started on the right foot.

While the US did enjoy 64% of the ball, the hosts took clear advantage of the opportunities they got. Their backline was also extremely solid, keeping a vibrant USA attack at bay. Sam Adekugbe sealed the deal for the Canucks in the final seconds of injury time with a breathtaking solo goal to give his side just their second victory over the Yankees in 37 years and first in WCQ since 1980. Canada’s recent success has also drastically improved their World Cup odds.

El Salvador vs Canada Prediction
To be honest, I don’t see Canada having any problems winning here. Center-back Steven Vitoria is unavailable, but they have more than enough viable options defensively to hold it down. Also, the Canucks are in top form right now and barely concede. That being said, it’s worth taking them on the moneyline and to keep a clean sheet against a rather lifeless El Salvador attack.
Pick: Canada (-108), Canada to Keep a Clean Sheet (+130)
