Glasgow Rangers have made up ground on Young Boys of Berne in Europa League Group G and now qualification for the knockout stages is wide open with two games remaining.

The Scottish club scored a significant 2-0 home win over Porto last Thursday, while Switzerland’s Young Boys were held 1-1 at Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

Young Boys lead the group with seven points but Rangers – who also have seven points – are slight favorites at +110 to finish top of the very tight and tense section.

Porto and Feyenoord Could Qualify

It is not yet impossible for third-placed Porto or bottom club Feyenoord to reach the knockout stage. Each has four points.

Young Boys are priced at +125 for first place with Porto at +650 and Feyenoord at +1400.

The group could be decided in a crunch clash between the two current leading sides in Glasgow on Matchday 6 (Thursday, December 12, Ibrox Stadium, 3pm EST).

A showdown  scenario  suggests Rangers are more likely winners as they will be at home with the backing of ferocious home support on the group’s final night. But this group is very finely balanced.

There is little advantage to be identified in the preceding games on Matchday 5 apart from the fact that Rangers will be playing the bottom side Feyenoord

However, both teams could already have qualified by then, which may take some edge off the occasion.

There is little advantage to be identified in the preceding games on Matchday 5 apart from the fact that Rangers will be playing the bottom side Feyenoord having beaten them 1-0 on Matchday 1.

Young Boys will have home advantage against third-placed Porto on the same evening but were defeated by the Portuguese outfit 2-1 on Matchday 1.

Checking the Europa League odds, Rangers are priced to win the competition outright at +1000. Young Boys are +1500 with Porto at +2500 and Feyenoord at +10,000.

Tight and Low-Scoring Group

The closeness of the group is summed up by the fact that it has been low-scoring. Young Boys have hit the net only six times in four games while conceding four. Rangers have scored five goals and conceded three.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers’ side have recovered from a 2-1 defeat at Young Boys on Matchday 2 to match the Swiss club on points.

Gerrard’s history of inspirational success in European football could be an advantage.

He was captain of Liverpool when they came from three goals down to win on penalties in the famous Champions League final of 2005 against AC Milan in Istanbul.

Gerrard’s stature and experience could be an incremental advantage if the group goes down to the wire.

He was also a winner of the UEFA Cup with Liverpool in 2001.

Gerrard’s stature and experience could be an incremental advantage if the group goes down to the wire.

His men could also be driven by the need to match their fierce Glasgow rivals Celtic who qualified for the group stage last week with a famous win at Lazio.

Rangers were in second place in the Scottish Premier League after 11 games with nine wins, one draw and one defeat.

Young Boys were on top of the Swiss Super League after 13 games with eight wins, four draws and one defeat.

Pick: Glasgow Rangers (+110)
