Repeat the Beating?

There isn’t a rich history of reigning World Cup champions following up with a win in the Euro. Lately, though, it’s proven to be a 50-50 proposition.

Spain won the World Cup in 2010 and the Euro 2012 tournament. But it’s the other country to pull off this unique double that is most intriguing.

France won its first World Cup title in 1998 at home. The French then won the 2000 Euro.

France also won the 2018 World Cup. Will a repeat performance be in the cards at Euro 2020?

France is for Real

France went 8-1-1 to top its group in qualifying. Antoine Griezmann scored his 30th goal for his country in France’s 2-0 win over Albania in the last qualifier for the French. He also led all players in Euro 2020 qualifying with seven assists.

However, France missed out by a point on earning one of the top six seeds for the tournament. The French will be situated in Pot B for the group stage draw, meaning they could face a tougher road to the title.

England Without a Euro Success Story

England’s run to the semifinal of the 2018 World Cup was the country’s best showing in an international tournament since a semifinal appearance at Euro 1996. England’s top performance in the Euro was a third-place finish in 1968, when the English were reigning World Cup champs.

England’s main concern heading toward Euro 2020 is sorting out the midfield. Manager Gareth Southgate has stuggled to find a mix that works there through qualifying. Still, Southgate believes his side is more prepared for this event than they were for the 2018 World Cup.

Intriguing Euro 2020 Prices

Some traditional powers are offered at long prices and might be worth a look. When was the last time you could get +800 on Germany entering a major international competition? The Germans went 7-0-1 to win their qualifying group and grab one of the top six seeds.

Italy also gained a top-six seed and have won 11 matches in a row under manager Roberto Mancini. The Euro 2012 finalists can be had at +1200.

Pick: Italy (+1200)
