Champions League Chances Fading?

Going into last weekend’s games, both Getafe and Villarreal had genuine hopes of claiming La Liga’s fourth Champions League spot but suffered setbacks in their quest to close the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Sevilla.

While Sevilla were comfortably beating Leganes 3-0  – giving their goal difference a significant boost in the process – Getafe were drawing away at Osasuna, and Villarreal were being soundly beaten on their home patch by Barcelona. For Getafe, in particular, this was an opportunity missed and their task was made even harder on Monday night when Sevilla entertained Eibar in their game in hand and won 1-0.

As a result, Sevilla now has a healthy six-point lead over Villarreal, with Getafe a further point behind, and have a better goal difference than the two teams chasing them. With just four matches to go, the chase for Champions League soccer looks all but over for the Azulones and El Submarino Amarillo but while it’s still mathematically possible, both teams will still believe. They are both though in a position where one more defeat will likely signal the end of their Champions League dream, and so this game is absolutely massive – a must-win for both!

Barca Damage El Submarino Amarillo Hopes

Villarreal’s 4-1 home defeat by Barcelona was especially damaging for them, not least because the form table had suggested there was something in it for the Yellow Submarine. While defeat to Barca is never a surprise, this was one occasion where a point at least seemed perfectly possible. To have lost so heavily in those circumstances was a huge disappointment and, potentially, damaging to morale ahead of the run-in. Time will tell.

Prior to the Barca defeat, Javier Calleja’s men had won 13 points from their previous five games and were on a roll, so Calleja will be hoping last weekend was merely a blip and not a sign of things to come.

Getafe boss Jose Bordalas has had a tougher ride since the lockdown ended and with the finishing line almost in sight, Getafe have faltered at the worst possible time.  Four draws from their last six matches and an overall return of seven points – six less than Villarreal – means the pressure gauge is now on 11 as they prepare for this huge game.

Late Fitness Tests for Getafe

In terms of team news, Bordalas will be forced into making at least one change to his starting XI as Jorge Molina misses out through suspension. His likely replacement will be Hugo Duro, while Xabier Etxeita is also touch and go and faces a late fitness test. If he misses out, Chema will likely slot into central defense.

Calleja has fitness concerns too, with the two of his strike force, Paco Alcacer and Carlos Bacca, both picking up minor knocks at the weekend. He’ll leave it as late as possible to make a decision on both, but if either fails to make it, Javi Ontiveros looks almost certain to get the nod.

No Goal-Fest

So, with stakes impossibly high, and with games like these often being very tense, nervy affairs, it’s conceivable that early on both teams will be cautious, but with both needing a win so badly, I’m expecting it to open up into an end-to-end affair.

Both are in a position where one more defeat will likely signal the end of their Champions League dream, and so this game is absolutely massive

But having shipped four goals against Barca, Villarreal will still be keen not to over-commit going forward and with Getafe being the lowest scorers in the top six, I’m not expecting a goal-fest. A low-scoring draw is tempting, especially at +200 but, for me, the away win at +205 offers value, with Villarreal bouncing back from the weekend’s disappointment and repeating their 1-0  win early in the year in the reverse fixture.

Pick: Villarreal to win (+205)
