  • It was far from pretty, but Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Bilbao last matchday has kept Los Blancos four points clear of rivals Barcelona with four matches to play.
  • Zidane’s title frontrunners are -455 favorites at home against struggling Alaves (+1100) on Friday, while Barça are also massive favorites (-588) at home against all-but relegated Espanyol (+1350) on Wednesday

Sergio Ramos’ controversial penalty fired Real to a 1-0 win at Bilbao and retained the club’s four-point lead atop La Liga; if both contenders earn their expected wins at home against far-inferior opposition in Matchday 35, Barça’s title hopes will take a serious blow.

Elsewhere, Espanyol are all but confirmed to be in the Segunda Division next season; their underwhelming 0-1 home defeat against Leganes has left them 11 points from safety with just 12 possible points still on the table.

Matchday 35 kicks off on Tuesday when Valencia (-116) hosts Valladolid (+310) at 1:30 pm EST.

All odds taken July 5

Pick 1: Betis vs. Osasuna

Another year, another disappointing finish for Real Betis (9-11-14); one win from seven matches since the COVID restart has left them closer to the relegation zone than the top half of the table.

Osasuna (11-12-11), on the flip side, will be thrilled if they can finish the season in their current 11th-place spot.

Further, Jagoba Arrasate’s squad has been solid on the road post-COVID: Beyond a 2-0 defeat at Valencia, Osasuna’s picked up two wins (2-0 @ Eibar, 1-0 @ Leganes) and a credible draw at Sociedad (1-1).

PICK: Osasuna +0.5 (-124)

Pick 2: Barcelona vs. Espanyol

It’s hardly been smooth sailing this season for Barcelona (22-7-5), and the season will ultimately go down as a disappointment barring a Champions League triumph in Lisbon come August, but this remains a supremely talented squad.

Espanyol (5-9-20) are firmly the worst team in La Liga, following the aforementioned loss to another likely-relegated team in Leganes on Sunday.

The recent head-to-head history is relatively respectable — Espanyol has earned a draw in three of the last five meetings — but current form and the gulf in squad talent level this season may be too much for the second-biggest club in Barcelona to overcome.

PICK: Barcelona -2 (-118)

Pick 3: Real Madrid vs. Alaves

There really is not much more to do to side with Real Madrid (23-8-3) over Alaves (9-8-17) than look at recent form and head-to-head history.

Since Alaves earned promotion back to La Liga in 2016, their results away to Real are: 0-3 (Apr. 2017), 0-4 (Feb. 2018) and 0-3 (Feb. 2019); more recently, Asier Garitano’s team has lost five-straight games and six of seven since the COVID break.

While margins have been narrow for Real, with their last four wins coming by a single goal, Zidane’s men should be ultra-motivated by the chance to step closer to the league title — and fill the net against an out-of-sorts opponent.

PICK: O 3, 3.5 (+129)
