The Champions League group stages proceed this week with Matchday 5. In Group G, table-toppers RB Salzburg will be looking to solidify their spot in the round of 16 as they look for a positive result against Lille, who are two points behind them in second place.
The Austrian side slipped up on Matchday 4, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg. Lille meanwhile beat Sevilla by the exact same scoreline thanks to a 51st-minute winner from Jonathan Ikone.
Karim Adeyemi’s brace propelled Salzburg to victory over the Ligue 1 title-holders in the reverse fixture on September 29th.

Lille Struggling All-Around
After winning the French top-flight last term, Lille has looked very poor so far in the 2021/22 campaign, both domestically and in Europe. Their Matchday 4 win over Sevilla was their first victory of the competition, settling for two scoreless draws and as previously mentioned, a loss to Salzburg.

Finding the back of the net has been a massive issue in Champions League action, bagging a mere three goals in four appearances. But, they’ve also only conceded three, which is a positive sign. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s men looked well on their way to a massive result against Monaco on Friday in Ligue 1, with Canadian Jonathan David scoring a double within the first 10 minutes. But, Lille ultimately struggled to keep their opponents at bay, settling for a 2-2 draw which leaves them 12th in the table and a whole 20 points off league leaders PSG.
Coming into Tuesday’s encounter, Lille’s only win since the start of October was on home soil vs. Sevilla. During that seven-game span though, the side has only lost twice and also drawn on four occasions. The French outfit is unbeaten in seven at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as well.

Despite their poor form, however, LOSC still does have a realistic shot of progressing to the knockout stages of Europe’s most prized competition. In fact, three points here could potentially put them at the very top of Group G ahead of the final matchday when they lock horns with the Wolves of Wolfsburg.
Injury-wise, Lille is dealing with several key absences. Midfielders Benjamin Andre and Jonathan Ikone will miss out due to suspension, while Renato Sanches is also injured. Burkan Yilmaz will return to the fold though and join David up top.
Young Salzburg Squad Hitting Cold Spell
RB Salzburg is riding a high as usual in the Austrian Bundesliga, sitting 15 points clear at the top and going 12-3-0 in 15 domestic matches. However, Matthias Jaissle’s side has seemed to hit a bit of a dry spell, collecting just one victory in their last four competitive appearances. On the weekend, Salzburg settled for a scoreless draw with one of the worst teams in the top flight then also lost to Wolfsburg before the international break.

Jaissle’s men are looking relatively solid in the Champions League, though. Their group is by no means an easy one but they’ve managed to collect seven points through four outings, defeating the Wolves and Lille while drawing Sevilla. In the process, Salzburg has netted seven goals and conceded five. 19-year-old Karim Adeyemi is lighting it up in Europe, bagging three goals in four games and already scoring 11 times in 14 league appearances this term.
His double against Lille will be something the young German will be looking to repeat on Tuesday as he continues to solidify himself as one of the hottest prospects on the continent. Salzburg has yet to win on the road in this year’s UCL campaign, but the Austrian giants will have real intent here as three points would see them through to the knockout rounds for the first time in club history.

Salzburg is still without backline duo Kamil Piatkowski and Bryan Okoh, but Oumar Solet will return to action. One of their most experienced players in Zlatko Junuzovic is still dealing with an injury as well.

Lille vs Salzburg Prediction
Both of these sides have a lot to play for on Tuesday, but the hosts are missing several players in the middle of the pitch that are very integral to their success. Salzburg meanwhile is basically at full strength and has proven to be the class of Group G. I expect them to beat Lille once again.
