The quest for a Coupe de France trophy continues this week, with eight teams in action. Lyon will play host to Marseille at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday, February 12th, kick-off 3:05 pm EST in the highlight match of the round. Marseille have been extremely successful in this competition, having appeared 19 times in the Coupe de France Final, winning 10 times.

Lyon has won the trophy five times in their history, but haven’t found themselves among the last two since 2012 when they lifted the cup.

These two sides played an entertaining match in November with Marseille coming out on top by one goal. With their previous result in mind, the moneyline for Lyon and Marseille is very close, so this should be a tantalizing fixture on Wednesday.

Marseille on a Run of Impressive Form

Andre Villas-Boas’ side has been playing very well lately, going unbeaten in their last five matches. They’ll head into Lyon on Wednesday fresh off a 1-0 Ligue 1 victory over Toulouse on Saturday. Marseille is currently second in the French top flight, 12 points behind league leaders PSG.

It’s very unlikely they’re going to catch the Parisians, but they will definitely be seeking a run at the French Cup title. The last time they appeared in the final of this competition was 2016, so it’s a long time coming for a side who is generally one of the better teams in France.

Former West Ham man Dimitri Payet is leading Marseille in scoring this term, netting eight goals and tallying three assists. This season has been an improvement for the Frenchman after bagging just four league goals last year in 31 appearances.

Lyon Looking for Success in Another Cup

Although Lyon is currently ninth in Ligue 1, they’re preparing for a round of 16 clash with Juventus in late February in the Champions League. Their domestic form hasn’t been very consistent, but with just a four-point gap between ninth and fifth spot in France, Lyon still has an opportunity at the top four and qualification for next year’s Champions League campaign.

Rudi Garcia’s squad crashed out of the semifinals of last year’s Coupe de France to eventual winners Rennes, who upset PSG in the final en route to their third title in club history. If Lyon can secure a win on Wednesday, they’ll be in the semis for the second straight year.

Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay form one of the most exhilarating partnerships in France, scoring 21 of Lyon’s 35 goals this term. Depay has missed a substantial amount of matches this year due to injury, but when he’s been available, the Dutch marksman has been deadly in the final third. However, it looks like he will miss the rest of the season after potentially tearing his ACL in December.

Lyon Will Advance

The last outing between these two sides resulted in a 2-1 win for Marseille on home soil behind Dimitri Payet’s brace. However, given Lyon’s success in this competition and also their resurgence in the Champions League, I do believe they will beat Marseille on this occasion, booking their ticket to the semifinals of the Coupe de France.

Pick: Lyon 2-1
