Undefeated in 9 Matches, Marseille Odds-On Favorites for 2nd Place; 50-1 for Ligue 1 Title

With Marseille winning once again this past weekend and Paris Saint-Germain drawing 3-3 with Monaco, the Ligue 1 title race is surprisingly heating up. Marseille has seen their Ligue 1 odds shorten from 80-1 on December 17 to 50-1 as of today.

Thomas Teuchel’s PSG side have been in impressive form for the most part, except for three defeats against teams in the bottom half of the table earlier this season. They have been playing better lately though, also going unbeaten in their last nine league fixtures just like Marseille.

Marseille currently has the second-best odds to win Ligue 1 this year at +5000, a substantial amount ahead of both Lyon and Lille. They also are the odds-on favorite to win France’s top flight without PSG at -163 odds. The next closest side to them in the “Winner without PSG” category is Lyon and Monaco at +800 who are both 12 points back of Marseille.

Marseille Playing Impressive Football

Andre Villas-Boas’ side can’t stop winning lately, securing the full three points in eight of their last nine matches, while drawing once against Metz. Right now, they definitely look like the only team in France that can give PSG a run for their money in regards to the Ligue 1 title. The Parisians have won the trophy six out of the last seven years, including two back to back titles.

Marseille played PSG once so far this season but lost 4-0. However, they are in better form now, but they won’t clash with the league leaders until March as they will be looking for redemption. If Marseille can continue to put up positive results until their match with PSG in March, it could prove to be a very important one for the fate of both sides in the title race.

PSG is Going to be Hard to Stop

It’s well known that PSG is a powerhouse, stacked with some of the best players in the world such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. But even they have had their struggles this season. However, it’s hard to think they will slip and let Marseille take over first place. PSG currently has one game in hand as well, already sitting five points ahead of Marseille. The French giants have scored a whopping 46 goals in just 19 matches while conceding just 13. No team in France has scored that many goals and conceded such a small amount.

PSG Will Win Another Title

There’s no doubt that Marseille has been extremely impressive this season. However, PSG is just too powerful to be overtaken in first place. Their clinical abilities in the final third along with a fantastic backline anchored by Thiago Silva continue to impress weekly.

Marseille should definitely finish in second place with an eight-point cushion over Rennes currently, but a title will definitely be a hard task with Paris Saint Germain standing in their way.
