Newcastle United is evidently heading into a brand new era after the €305 million Saudi Arabian takeover of the club earlier this month. With that being said, Steve Bruce’s time in charge looks to be coming to an end following the 1,000th match of his managerial career on Sunday in a 3-2 defeat to Spurs.
Ownership has already pinpointed numerous possible candidates to replace the Englishman, with former Borussia Dortmund tactician Lucien Favre leading the way in the odds. Find the full list below.

Bruce’s Days Are Numbered
For far too many years, Newcastle supporters have been handed disappointment as their club hovered just above the relegation zone in the Premier League. This term, the Magpies have yet to secure a victory, going 0-3-5while scoring only 10 goals and conceding 19.

Bruce is simply not getting it done and it’s only a matter of time until he’s sacked. During his tenure at St. James Park, the 60-year-old has a dismal 28.9 winning percentage, the lowest of his career. Newcastle is showing absolutely no improvement under Bruce and in order to head in a different direction, it starts with making a change in the dugout.
Favre, Fonseca Logical Options?
Favre was canned by Dortmund last December and has been jobless since. He’s coached mostly in Germany aside from a four-year spell in his homeland with Zurich while also managing Nice in Ligue 1 for two years. With BVB, Favre enjoyed his fair share of success, compiling a 61.8 winning percentage in 110 matches. For Newcastle, this could be a very logical option. He has a proven track record in Europe, having guided the likes of Dortmund, Nice, and Monchengladbach into the Champions League.

As for Fonseca, his attacking-heavy style of football is intriguing given Newcastle’s lack of finishing abilities in front of goal. His contract ran out at Roma at the end of last season, with Jose Mourinho replacing him at the Stadio Olimpico. The 48-year-old Fonseca was on the brink of joining Tottenham this past summer, but Spurs instead hired Nuno Espirito Santo. The Portuguese gaffer led Shakhtar to three Ukrainian titles then also took Roma to the last four of the Europa League.
Are Lampard, Gerrard Realistic Possibilities?
Frank Lampard has been unemployed since he was fired by Chelsea in January and was briefly linked to the Crystal Palace job before Patrick Viera nabbed it. To be honest, Lampard needs to manage a club where expectations won’t be sky-high, like when he was at Derby County. Newcastle fans are going to be looking for success from the get-go once they can buy more high-profile players, which is going to result in more pressure on the Englishman. He wouldn’t be a good hire.
🗣️ "I've certainly got one eye on Newcastle in terms of seeing Brucey get his 1000th game — great character of the game."

As for Gerrard, he has been doing a phenomenal job with Rangers since June of 2018. Last season was a historic campaign for the Liverpool legend, guiding the Scottish giants to a league title while going unbeaten. It was also their first trophy in 10 years, dethroning rivals, Celtic. Given the success Gerrard is having with the club, he’s fully committed his future to them and is reportedly not interested in the potential Newcastle vacancy at the moment, per BBC. However, Gerrard would be a terrific choice. He’s managing a big club in Scotland and has helped them improve. The same could happen at St. James.
Best Bet
Before buying more talent, a new boss must be hired. It’s extremely hard to imagine Bruce making it through the 2021-22 season with the Magpies. While the odds are slightly favoring Favre, I like Fonseca as the next gaffer of Newcastle. He brings experience, expertise, and an intriguing style of play to the club. Bruce is only owed €8 million, which means it wouldn’t be difficult to cut ties. Fonseca isn’t exactly weighing other job options right now, either. This would be a great option.
Pick: Paulo Fonseca +450
