Philadelphia Union vs Nashville SC Betting Trends

Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks both the third meeting of the season, and third all-time clash, between these two clubs. The home team has prevailed in each of their two previous dates, with Nashville recording a 1-0 victory back on July 3, and Philadelphia responding with a 1-0 win on home turf on October 23. That victory marked the start of the Union’s current five-match undefeated streak.

Philadelphia has been a reliable bet overall when playing on home turf. The club has recorded six straight wins at Subaru Park, claiming victory by multi-goal margins on three occasions, and keeping clean sheets in each of their past five. Conversely, Nashville has struggled on the road of late. The club has posted just one win over their past six away matches, a 6-3 rout of bottom-feeding FC Cincinnati, and have been forced to settle for scoreless draws three times over that stretch.

Philadelphia Union Outlook

Pegged as a +1150 bet entering the campaign, the Union sits as an improved +700 wager in the MLS Cup odds going into Sunday’s contest. Despite posting just two wins over their final six regular-season contests, the club managed to hand on to second place in the MLS Eastern Conference table, joining Nashville at 54 points.

While it would be a mistake to describe the Union as an offensive powerhouse, the club’s strikers have been getting the job done of late, scoring multiple goals on six occasions over their past nine contests. However, the club needed a full 120 minutes to eke out last week’s First Round victory over the Red Bulls.

Kacper Przybyłko has led the offensive charge for Philadelphia. The German striker led the team with 12 goals this season, including the lone goal in the Union’s recent 1-0 home win over Nashville, and leads all players as a +150 bet to score anytime on Sunday.

Nashville SC Outlook

Listed as a +850 bet in the MLS Cup odds, a vast improvement over their season-opening +5000 odds, Nashville has once again emerged as a playoff threat in just their second season in the MLS.

The club shares the distinction of strongest defensive team in this season’s playoffs, along with the Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders, after allowing an average of just 0.97 goals per match this season. However, they were fortunate to withstand the Orlando City attack in last week’s win after surrendering an early goal, and subsequently surviving a couple of close calls before claiming the lead for good in the 74th minute with the second of two markers from Hany Mukhtar.

The German midfielder led the Boys in Gold with 18 goals this season, and has found the back of the net on four occasions over his past three outings. Mukhtar’s recent steady production has lifted him to a +240 bet to score anytime on Sunday. However, five of his past six markers have come on home turf, and he has scored just once over his past five road outings.

The Picks: Union (+115); UNDER 2.5 (-215)
