Poland entertains England in  Warsaw on Matchday 6 of UEFA World Cup Qualifying in Group I on Wednesday, September 8 at 2:45 pm ET. England’s flying start to qualification has seen them win five from five but this trip to second-placed Poland – who are five points behind them –  will almost certainly be their toughest test yet.

At the weekend, Gareth Southgate was able to rest some big names as his second-string comfortably beat a spirited Andorra 4-0, while Poland was even more ruthless in their contest with San Marino in winning 7-1.

We list the odds, preview Poland vs England, and offer below the best picks for this World Cup qualifier.

Goal-Hungry Poland

While it was not part of Poland manager Paulo Sousa’s plan to concede against the minnows of San Marino – it was their first goal in World Cup qualifying for eight years – it was the merest of blips on an evening that saw them hit seven. They were already 4-0 up when Nicola Nanni made the most of a defensive blunder to score San Marino’s goal and the Poles added three more to record the easiest of wins.

Most of the damage in San Marino was done by Poland substitute Adam Buksa, who scored his first international hat-trick, with Robert Lewandowski (two), Karol Linetty and Karol Swiderski also chipping in.

Poles in Fine Form at Home

The Poles have scored 11 goals in their last two after hammering Albania 4-1 last Thursday and then following it up with the Andorra thrashing. They now sit in second spot in the group, five points behind England, but are being pushed hard by the group’s surprise package, Albania, who they beat but who are just a point behind them.

With Albania playing San Marino this week, Poland has an urgent need to get something from the game against England or they risk being demoted to third place. They do, however, have a very good home record in World Cup qualifying to fall back on and are currently on a seven-game winning run, scoring at least twice in each of those games.

Redemption for Saka

Gareth Southgate made no fewer than 11 changes to his starting XI for Sunday’s game with Andorra but against spirited yet limited opponents they were still able to run out comfortable 4-0 winners – the same scoreline they achieved in difficult circumstances in Hungary just three days earlier. It was England’s first appearance at Wembley since losing the Euro 2020 final to Italy in July and will have laid to rest some of the ghosts of that night, particularly for Bukayo Saka, who missed the vital penalty against the Italians but scored the fourth on Sunday.

In addition to Saka’s header, Jesse Lingard scored twice and Harry Kane a penalty, as England did what was needed to maintain their 100-percent record; a proud one that will be given a severe examination in Warsaw against a good, solid team but one that contains one of the world’s best strikers in Lewandowski.

Maximum Points for Southgate’s England

With England having taken 15 points out of a possible 15 so far, the five-point gap to Poland looks healthy enough but Southgate will not allow any complacency to creep in. Defeat in Warsaw would see the Poles breathing down their necks and with four games still to go it could make for a tense finish to the group, so while Southgate would clearly love the win, he will be even more determined that his team does not lose the game.

As well as looking full of goals, England boasts an excellent defensive record having conceded just once so far – only bettered by Denmark who has yet to concede a single goal. England also arrives in Poland with an away record every bit as impressive as Poland’s home record in World Cup qualifying, having gone 12 games unbeaten on the road – their last defeat coming in Ukraine back in 2009. They also come into this off the back of four straight victories away from home in all competitions.

Poland vs England Prediction

Poland has only ever beaten England once in 20 attempts – way back in 1973 in a decisive qualifier for the 1974 World Cup – but they come into this in good shape and with a fit and goal-hungry Lewandowski and an in-form Buksa. They will push England hard, even though Southgate’s big names will be fresh after having missed some or all of the win over Andorra.

It is hard to make a case for a Poland win, although they will give it a shot in front of a fervent Warsaw crowd, but there is a decent case for the draw, especially if the Polish defense can avoid conceding early on. With England mindful that it is more important not to lose the game than win it, the draw at +280 represents some good value.

Pick: Poland and England to draw (+280)
