Portugal and Switzerland clash for the third time this year on Tuesday in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. Switzerland won the previous meeting in the Nations League, ending a run of three straight victories for Portugal over the Rossocrociati. We have the Portugal vs Switzerland odds and our prediction here.

World Cup odds place Portugal as odds-on favorites to win the match in 90 minutes despite their defeat to South Korea in their final group stage fixture.

Switzerland needed a dramatic win over Serbia to book their place in the knockout rounds. It is now three straight Round of 16 appearances at the World Cup for the Swiss, but they haven’t made it to the last eight since they hosted the competition in 1954. Portugal were knocked out at this stage four years ago, and last made it to the quarters in 2006.

Switzerland has a good record at tournaments and made the last eight of the Euros in 2021, but they are underdogs in this match with an implied probability of just 22.7% to win. Portugal haven’t won a knockout tie since they went all the way at the Euros in 2016, yet FanDuel is giving them an implied probability of over 52% to wrap this up inside 90 minutes.

Over/Under and Spread

Portugal are one-goal favorites. Bettors can get Portugal -1 at +260 with FanDuel. To simply advance to the next round by any means, Portugal is -240, while the Swiss are +190.

Bookies are expecting a relatively low-scoring fixture here, with a -104 price on both teams to score and the over/under goal total set at 2.5. The over is out at +126, with under 2.5 total goals at -152.

Portugal vs Switzerland Preview

Portugal have been renowned for a safety-first approach in the Fernando Santos era. That has changed slightly in Qatar, with a lone clean sheet in the group stage and some more attacking team selections with Santos finally taking advantage of the attacking talent at his disposal. Bruno Fernandes starred in the first round with four goal involvements, and the Manchester United man will be crucial for Os Navegadores as they look to break down Switzerland.

Switzerland are reliable tournament performers with plenty of big-game experience throughout their squad. This team also knocked out France in last summer’s Euros, and will believe they can stage another upset here after beating Serbia 3-2 to progress from a fiercely competitive Group G. Murat Yakin is expected to stick with a similar XI — Switzerland have the energy in midfield to make life difficult for Portugal and can be a threat on the counter with Breel Embolo as the focal point.

Only eight teams committed more fouls per match than Switzerland in the group stage. Portugal have players willing to battle if this gets ugly. These sides combined for 12 yellow cards in their group matches, but this should be a combative 90 minutes after their pair of Nations League encounters in the summer. Over 3.5 cards is good value at -156. There was four yellows in each of their last two meetings.

Portugal vs Switzerland Prediction

This is unlikely to be an end-to-end affair. Switzerland averaged under 48% possession in the group stage, and Portugal were over 60%. The favorites will dominate the ball and look to pick apart a deep Swiss backline, but this Switzerland side is no pushover. They will compete hard, and they have enough talent to create something when they do get the ball.

A moment of individual brilliance will probably be enough to decide this match. Look for there to be just one or two goals in a feisty match between two teams who know each other well.

Pick: Under 2.5 total goals & over 3.5 total cards (+161)
