Manchester City's Raheem Sterling started the season on fire with five goals in his first three games but they have dried up since. Is he still value for the Golden Boot? Photo by Brad Tutterow (Flickr).
  • Raheem Sterling now out to 11/1 for the EPL’s Golden Boot
  • Jamie Vardy now favorite and on course to match his 2015-16 feat
  • Harry Kane also now knocking on the door at 5/1

Raheem Sterling’s flying start to the new season in front of goal has tailed off. A month in and he looked nailed on to be among the contenders for the EPL’s Golden Boot but a dry patch has seen him drop down to joint-fifth in the goal-scorer charts.

But will he rally? His average EPL Golden Boot odds are now +1150 compared to +725 last month. The last time he had odds over 10-1 was way back on August 2 when they were +1400.

So, is he a good bet at these longer odds? Or does another player offer better value? We’ll take a look.

English Premier League Top Goalscorer Odds

Player Current EPL Goals Odds
Jamie Vardy 12 +325
Sergio Aguero 9 +450
Harry Kane 7 +500
Tammy Abraham 10 +550
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 8 +750
Mohamed Salah 6 +800
Sadio Mane 8 +800
Raheem Sterling 7 +1100
Marcus Rashford 7 +2200
Raul Jimenez 6 +4000

Odds taken on Nov. 27.

Raheem’s Lukewarm Autumn

Sterling’s flying start to the season has tailed off in line with Man City’s inconsistent start to the season – at least inconsistent by their high standards. For them to challenge Liverpool at the top of the EPL, the Citizens need goals from all fronts rather than relying heavily on Sergio Aguero, and Sterling is one of those they look to.

He began the season on fire with five in the opening three games but has only scored twice since. Those hoping to find value here may consider +1100 a worthwhile bet but Sterling, as things stand, looks unlikely to be challenging the usual suspects at the top of the Golden Boot table. He’s drifted in the betting for a reason.

Abraham has fitted perfectly into Frank Lampard’s vibrant team and has already netted ten times.

Vardy on Fire

Leading the goal-scoring and EPL Golden Boot table is Jamie Vardy, whose Leicester City team has been outstanding in this season’s EPL and have emerged, ahead of Man City, as Liverpool’s main challengers.

While this is a very different Foxes team from the one that won the title in 2015/16 in terms of playing style, there are striking similarities in the way they are taking on the EPL’s ‘elite’ with no fear. The other common denominator is Vardy, who scored 24 goals that season. While +325 may not sound great value, he’s going to be close to winning that Golden Boot and these odds are only going one way.

Harry Gets Jose Boost & Aguero Keeping On

Harry Kane is another of the usual suspects who cannot be ignored. The season has been a slow-burner for Tottenham but after something of a nightmare start, the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino and the appointing of Jose Mourinho has sparked life into their campaign. Seven goals in two games, including three goals for Kane, suggests there is plenty more to come and there are worse bets out there than the 5/1 on offer for him to win the Golden Boot.

Sterling began the season on fire with five in the opening three games but has only scored twice since.

Sergio Aguero falls into the Kane category – ignore him at your peril. Even in what, for him, has been a lukewarm season he’s still scored nine times and with Man City intent on chasing down Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City, he’ll be at the forefront. Even though Sterling has stalled, don’t expect Aguero to. He’s scored 21 goals last season; I expect him to better that this season.

Tammy Leading the Chelsea Charge

The interesting one here is Tammy Abraham. The Chelsea youngster, in his first season in the EPL, has fitted perfectly into Frank Lampard’s vibrant team and has already netted ten times. If Chelsea are to continue their push for the title they will need Abraham to maintain this level. Inexperience may count against him in the second half of the season but he’ll be edging towards 20 goals.

And, finally, last season’s three joint-winners, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will almost certainly be in the mix. None of them have caught fire so far, but all are still in striking distance of the Golden Boot leaders. So watch this space.

Pick: Jamie Vardy +325
