Difficult November for Sociedad

After making a flying start to the campaign, Sociedad endured a difficult November during which they lost the lead of La Liga. From being in the mix for the league title, they now find themselves down in fifth place and outside the Champions League places.

For them to now miss out on a place in this season’s UCL round of 32, would be a bitter blow for the team from San Sebastián whose aim is to regularly compete with the elite of Spain and Europe.

Sociedad’s main issue during November was an inability to be able to turn draws into wins, but things have slipped further in the last few weeks and they head into this game having won just once in their last five – that win coming against lower league Panadería Pulido in the Copa del Rey. They now face this must-win game to keep their European campaign alive.

Must-Win for Real

Real Sociedad find themselves in this must-win position due to collecting just a point from their last two UEL games, starting with the disappointing 1-1 home draw with Sturm Graz on Matchday 4. Worse was to come when on Matchday 5 they suffered a 2-1 defeat in Monaco, and as a result of PSV beating Graz 2-0 at home that same evening, they dropped out of the group’s top two.

Los Txuri-Urdin’s problem of late has been a lack of firepower and, while defensively they have been sound – just 13 conceded in 16 league games and 6 in the UEL – they have only a modest +6 goal difference (GD) in La Liga and a 0 GD in the Europa League. With PSV knowing that a point here will be enough, this is a real test for Sociedad who have no option but to attack.

So Far, So Good for PSV

It is a case of so far so good for PSV who have a place in the Europa League’s round of 32 in their grasp, while also being heavily invested in the Eredivisie title race.

Domestically, the men from Eindhoven are among a small group of teams who regularly challenge Ajax but usually from a distance. Last season, for example, Roger Schmidt’s team were runners-up yet a whopping 16 points adrift of the champions but this season is currently third with only a two-point gap.

Crucial Win in Graz for the Dutch

The general consensus is that this PSV squad is better equipped than last season’s to challenge for the big prizes and so, as well as hoping to take Ajax all the way, will be aiming to improve on last season’s Europa League run where they were knocked out by Olympiacos in the round of 32. That task was certainly made easier thanks to Sociedad slipping up against Graz and then Monaco, but PSV now has to get the job done themselves.

While Sociedad was losing in Monaco, PSV was beating Graz 2-0 and it was the combination of those two results that have put the Dutch in pole position for qualification. With a draw being enough for Schmidt’s men, they are in the fortuitous position of not having to chase the game and the onus is very much on Sociedad to make something happen. It is timely therefore that PSV is currently on a seven-game unbeaten run.

Real Sociedad vs PSV Prediction

While home advantage favors Sociedad, they need to overcome some ordinary recent form if they are to get the win they need. While the draw will be enough for PSV, I see them being effective on the break and making the most of Sociedad’s need to push forward in numbers.

For that reason, for me, there is value in the away win, probably by the odd goal.

Picks: PSV to win (+330) / PSV to win 2-1 (+1400)
