On Tuesday, November 3rd, kick-off 12:55 PM EST, we’ll see the top two teams in Group B clash as Shakhtar Donetsk host Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach on Champions League Matchday 3.

In a tough pod with the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan, both of these sides have done fairly well to this point considering their high-profile competition. Donetsk currently leads the group with four points after a Matchday 1 win over Los Blancos and a draw with Inter last week. Monchengladbach meanwhile, have grabbed a point in each of their two outings thus far against the La Liga and Serie A giants.

This will be the first meeting ever between Shakhtar and Monchengladbach in a competitive fixture.

Shakhtar Looking to Continue Impressive European Form

Nestled in a difficult group, it’s safe to say that no one could have predicted that Shakhtar Donetsk would be at the top after their first two matches against such quality sides. But, the Ukrainian powerhouse has looked solid.

Beating Real Madrid is a task in itself. However, doing it on the road is a whole different story. Although the erratic atmosphere of fans wasn’t present, Shakhtar still took it right to Zinedine Zidane’s squad right from the get-go, taking a 3-0 lead by the 42nd minute.

They did end up conceding two early goals in the second half, but their backline proved to be just strong enough to hold off a vibrant Madrid attack in order to get the full three points. Shakhtar was also missing 13 first-team players due to COVID-19 and still managed to leave Spain with a victory.

Matchday 2 was another impressive performance for Luis Castro’s men, playing to a scoreless draw with Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan. With the dynamic duo of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku pressing all night long for the Italians, Shakhtar once again held their own, playing a relatively even match against the same team who knocked them out of the Europa League Semifinals last term.

Gladbach Enter on Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak

Borussia Monchengladbach may not have a win to their name so far in this year’s UCL campaign, but they haven’t lost in seven matches across all competitions. Their last defeat was by the hands of Dortmund on September 19th in the Bundesliga.

Fresh off their first competitive victory ever over RB Leipzig in league play on Saturday, Marco Rose’s side should enter this clash in Ukraine with lots of confidence.

On Champions League Matchday 2, they took an early 2-0 lead at home against Real Madrid thanks to two beautiful goals by striker Marcus Thuram, who was neatly set up by attacking partner Alassane Plea with a world-class through ball that was clinically finished by the Frenchman for the first tally. However, they did concede two late goals in the last five minutes of the second half, taking away just a point. A victory on Tuesday would see Gladbach slide into the top spot in Group B ahead of Shakhtar.

Both teams enter Tuesday’s clash in fine form. Every fixture against a German side has resulted in a draw for Shakhtar, but they’ve failed to win in their last seven Champions League matches on home turf. Given Gladbach’s recent positive results against two quality sides in Real Madrid and RB Leipzig, I’m giving them the upper hand here.

Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea are starting to link up more frequently in the final third as they did on many different occasions last term and should play a key part in Monchengladbach’s victory on Tuesday.  I don’t expect it to be a lopsided affair, but the Germans will pull out three points and take over first place in Group B for the time being.

Pick: Borussia Monchengladbach +123
