Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to put aside some inconsistent domestic form when they host Red Bull Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League Round-of-16 tie on Wednesday (Feb 19, 3pm ET).
Currently fifth in the English Premier League, last season’s Champions League runners-up face a tall task against Leipzig, however, who comfortably won Group G and are currently sitting in second in the Bundesliga, a point behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Can Spurs Make Experience Count?
Having made it all the way to last year’s final before losing 2-0 to Liverpool, Tottenham’s players learned how to win two-legged ties, in particular overcoming Manchester City and Ajax on away goals in the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively.
Wednesday’s game is only the Spurs’ fourth Champions League Round-of-16 tie, with the club sporting a 2-1 record in the first three, with a loss to Juventus two seasons ago counting against an earlier win against AC Milan and last year’s 4-0 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund.

That win was also Tottenham’s fifth success against a German club in a two-legged knockout format, versus just three defeats. The Spurs had won four consecutive matches against German teams too, before home-and-away losses to Bayern Munich in Group B play, where they ultimately finished second.
The Mourinho Effect
When Tottenham relieved Mauricio Pochettino of his managerial duties in November, they turned to Jose Mourinho, who is one of just five managers to win the Champions League with two different clubs.

But if he is to become the first man to win the Champions League with three different teams, he will likely have to do it the hard way. Tottenham are already without arguably their best player with Harry Kane, missing due to a hamstring injury. But the Spurs have made the most of that setback, with three wins, a draw and a 1-0 loss to Liverpool since the England captain limped off in a defeat against Southampton on New Year’s Day.
Spurs also bring an enviable home record into the match, having won 10 of their last 14 Champions League matches at home, and losing the other four.

Can Leipzig Keep it Up?
Playing what will be just their 31st European match, Red Bull Leipzig will face English opposition for the very first time on Wednesday. And though their European record away from home is not exactly sparkling (four wins in 15 games), they do seem to have mastered the Round of 16, winning five of their six ties at this stage in European competition.

Domestically, Julian Nagelsmann’s team is firing on all cylinders, having lost just three times in the Bundesliga and currently sitting one point back of league leaders Bayern Munich. And Leipzig had been on top until a recent three-game stretch that saw them pick up just two of a possible nine points, resulting in them ceding top spot to Bayern.
Leipzig will be missing the quartet of Kevin Kampl, Willi Orban, Ibrahima Konate and Tyler Adams, who are all out injured. But those losses didn’t stop Leipzig from rolling to a comfortable 3-0 home win over Werder Bremen on the weekend.
