  • Inter Milan have bolstered their midfield by acquiring Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspur
  • Eriksen recorded 69 goals and 89 assists over parts of six seasons with the Spurs, and bolsters an Inter attack hobbled by injury
  • With just two wins in seven league matches, Inter have slipped to second place on the Serie A table

Inter Milan captured European soccer headlines on Tuesday with the announcement that they have acquired Christian Eriksen in a transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, which they have finalized by signing the Danish midfielder to a contract through the 2024 season.

While the addition of Eriksen is expected to bolster the club’s attack, which has struggled in recent weeks, the signing has failed to move Inter Milan in the Serie A odds, where they continue to lag as +350 second favorites.

Eriksen Departure from Spurs Not Unexpected

A fixture in the Spurs midfield since his arrival in North London back in 2013, Eriksen played a key role in Tottenham’s march to the UEFA Champions League final last season. Both of Eriksen’s goals in last year’s UCL came against Inter, including the match winner in a 1-0 victory that eventually led to Inter’s exit in the group stage.

Eriksen’s departure from Tottenham is not unexpected. The 27-year-old had reportedly told Spurs management last summer that with his contract set to expire this summer, he was eager to make a move. Eriksen now leaves a Spurs squad that has struggled to stay in contention to see European action next season for much greener pastures in Milan. Inter closes out the month of January in control of second place on the Serie A table, just three points back of first-place Juventus.

Inter Struggling to Maintain Early-Season Momentum

However, since opening the league schedule on an impressive 12-1-1 win-draw-loss run, Inter have struggled to maintain momentum, going 2-5-0 in their past seven league contests. The club’s offense has cooled off considerably during their current middling stretch, scoring just 11 total goals during that stretch, and one or fewer goals in each of their five recent draws. And in addition to seeing Juve overtake them for top spot on the table, Inter have also seen their lead over Lazio reduced to just two points during their recent stretch of mediocrity.

Eriksen will be expected to inject some life into the Inter attack by creating more chances for the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, who have combined to score 25 goals sop far this season, but have both endured struggles with inconsistency. Lukaku has failed to find the back of the net over Inter’s past three league matches, and while Martinez has scored six times in his past eight matches, his recent red card makes his unavailable for upcoming matches.

Eriksen Poised to Benefit from Change of Scenery

And while Eriksen brings a solid resume from Tottenham that includes 69 goals and 89 assists, he was far from dominant in 20 appearances across all competitions with the underachieving Spurs this season. Indeed, his send-off in his final appearances in Tottenham was far from pleasant, with Spurs fans seizing every opportunity to boo him in his final three matches with the club.

A change of scenery may be just what Eriksen and Inter Milan need going into the final third of the season. Despite their recent struggles, Inter remains in control of their own destiny. In addition to a trio of favorable matchups with Udinese, AC Milan, and Sampdoria coming up on the league schedule, the club looks forward to upcoming road dates with Lazio and Juventus that are likely to define their season.

Inter Still Controls Own Destiny

Inter remain undefeated on the road this season, going 8-2-0 in league play, and haven’t suffered a road loss in four years to Lazio, who trail at +500 on the Serie A futures. And while wins over Juve have been scarce, Inter have surrendered just two total goals in their past three road dates with the defending Serie A champions, who continue to lead the way as -250 chalk.

Injuries still remain a concern. The club has missed midfielders Roberto Gagliardini and Kwadwo Asamoah, and attacker Alexis Sanchez, who have all missed time this season. However, with Eriksen stepping in to fill the void, Inter remains a solid value bet to claim their first Serie A title since 2010.

Pick: Inter Milan +350
