The last time the USA and England clashed on the pitch, a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final was on the line. The stakes aren’t as high for Thursday’s 7:00 pm EST rematch in the SheBelieves Cup.

That doesn’t mean the intensity won’t reach a fever pitch.

The four-country round-robin tournament features four of the top 13 sides in the world – the USA (#1), England (#6), Japan (#10) and Spain (#13). England won the most recent edition of this tournament in 2019.

England finished as runner-up in the 2018 tourney. The English went 1-1-1, including a 1-0 loss to the Americans.

England Believes in Miracles

England ended the three-year of the USA over this event last season. The Lionesses dropped Japan (3-0) and Brazil (2-1). In the key match, they held the Americans to a 2-2 draw.

The USA also drew 2-2 with Japan and beat Brazil 1-0.

England is 1-2-1 against the USWNT in the SheBelieves Cup. The English defeated the Americans 1-0 in the 2017 tournament and dropped 1-0 decisions in 2016 and 2018.

No Tea Time for USA

The Americans will be without striker Alex Morgan. Author of 107 goals in 169 matches for the USWNT, Morgan is on pregnancy leave.

It was Morgan who caused controversy during last summer’s Women’s World Cup semifinal. Celebrating after netting the first American goal in their 2-1 victory over England, she mocked English tradition by miming drinking a cup of tea.

A Changed Side

The Americans will see a much different look from the English than who faced them on the pitch last summer at the World Cup in France.

England has struggled since coming up short against the USA in the World Cup semis. The English have gone 1-4-1 over their last six international matches. The lone victory was against the Czech Republic, currently ranked #28 in the world by FIFA.

Manager Phil Neville has opted to inject some youth into his side for the SheBelieves Cup. His roster includes three players yet to earn a cap – goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, forward Alessia Russo and former England youth team captain Grace Fisk. Everton forward Sandy Kelly has one cap on her resume.

The English squad includes seven players who were part of the country’s bronze medal team at the 2018 U20 World Cup

MacIver may be forced into action. England first-choice keeper Elile Roebuck was injured on Sunday while playing a club match for Chelsea. Her fitness for the tournament opener is uncertain.

Americans are Rolling

Other than the absent Morgan, the USA will send out its A-list side for the SheBelieves Cup. That lineup has been firing on all cylinders in recent matches.

Under new manager Vlatko Andonovski, the Americans blew through the other countries in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament. The USWNT went 5-0, outscoring the opposition 25-0.

The USA squad includes 14 players with at least 50 caps, eight of whom have suited up over 100 times internationally wearing American colors.

The USA is riding a 28-game unbeaten streak and have scored two or more goals in 25 of those games. England always gives the Americans a good match but it’s difficult to see any other scenario at the end of this game other than a USWNT victory.

Pick: USA (-150)
