USA vs Panama Preview

The Americans have basically looked like the class of the Gold Cup. Despite the absence of all their European stars who are getting some much-needed rest before returning to their respective clubs, the States’ MLS-heavy squad is certainly showing well, going unbeaten in the group stages with a 2-1-0 record, scoring 13 and only conceding once.

But, the quarterfinals against the Canadians proved to be a difficult task, even though the Canucks also had none of their best players from across the pond. BJ Callaghan’s men absolutely dominated this fixture with 68% possession and 21 total shots, including eight on target. However, their breakthrough didn’t come until the 88th minute when Brandon Vazquez put them ahead.

Canada had different plans though as Steven Vitoria equalized from the spot to send the game to extra time, where both sides scored once more to force PKs. Thomas Christiansen’s group has never won the Gold Cup, finishing as runners-up in 2005 and 2013. Coincidentally enough, they tasted defeat to the US on both occasions. With just three victories in 25 overall meetings with the Americans, Panama faces a very daunting task here.
