  • Read on for all the odds and trends ahead of Wednesday afternoon’s matchup at Estadio de Mestalla in Valencia

Athletic Bilbao will be vying for a third straight trip to the Cope del Rey final when they hit the road on Wednesday for the second leg of their semi-final clash with Valencia CF. Bilbao was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw when they hosted Valencia in first-leg action three weeks ago, and have been outscored by a 7-2 overall margin in a pair of road defeats in La Liga play since that contest.

Valencia will be gunning for a chance to claim their second Copa del Rey title in four years, but have work to do to overcome a dismal eight-match run across all competitions that features just two victories.

Here’s a look at all the odds, trends, and best bets ahead of this Copa del Rey semi-final matchup, set for 3:00 pm ET on Wednesday afternoon at Estadio de Mestalla in Valencia.

Valencia vs Athletic Bilbao Betting Trends

In addition to being the second leg in their Copa del Rey semi-final matchup, Wednesday afternoon’s clash also marks the fourth meeting of the season between these clubs across all competitions. Little has been decided in recent head-to-head matchups, with each of the past four overall dates ending in a draw.

Athletic Bilbao opened the scoring in their three previous meetings this season, all of which have ended in a 1-1 score. In addition, Valencia are now winless in three straight home dates with Bilbao since tallying a 2-0 win in league play, back in March 2019. As discussed, recent dates between these clubs have been low-scoring, with just one of the past nine meetings featuring more than two total goals, a trend that has wreaked havoc on sports bettors wagering on the point spread.

Valencia CF Outlook

The Murciélagos return home for Wednesday’s contest on a high after tallying a 1-0 victory in Mallorca in last weekend’s league action. With the win, Valencia put the brakes on a four-game winless streak during which they were outscored by a 7-3 overall margin.

However, consistency at home remains a huge issue for Valencia. In addition to failing to tally consecutive wins during their current 4-4-4 win-draw-loss run, the club has also tallied just three wins in 11 home dates is all competitions since the end of August, capped by last week’s crushing 4-1 loss to Barcelona.

With four total goals scored in their past five outings, Valencia urgently needs to rediscover their offensive touch. The club’s top two goalscorers have been largely silent during this season’s tournament, with Goncalo Guedes and Carlos Soler combining to score just two total goals in Copa del Rey action. However, Guedes has contributed two of the club’s four goals scored over their past four home dates.

Athletic Bilbao Outlook

Consistency has also been a major concern for Athletic Bilbao, who were runners up at this tournament in each of the past two years. Indeed, it has been feast or famine for Los Leones, who followed up a 4-0 rout of Real Sociedad a week ago with a 4-0 loss in Barcelona last weekend while resting several key players. Overall, the club has surrendered seven total goals over their past two road contests after tallying just one defeat through their first 14 overall road dates of the season.

However, Bilbao had been far from road warriors. The club tallied just five road wins during that somewhat steady road stretch, with just one of those wins coming against an opponent currently positioned higher than 10th on the La Liga table. The club has been solid on the road when competing in the Copa del Rey, winning 11 of 12 contests since October 2017.

While Athletic Bilbao have been far from an offensive dynamo this season, they have enjoyed a full team effort of late, with seven different players accounting for the club’s past nine overall goals. That trend towards scoring by committee extends to the club’s play in this season’s Copa del Rey. However, both Nico Williams and Muniaim have stood out by each turning in a two-goal performance earlier in this season’s tournament.

The Pick: Draw (+210); BTTS (-110)
