Verona welcomes a high-flying Atalanta side to The Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on Saturday, July 18th, kick-off 11:15 am EST on Serie A Matchday 34. The hosts will be hungry for three points on home soil, after failing to win in their last four appearances in Serie A. Atalanta meanwhile, have been in wonderful form, going unbeaten in eight matches since football returned in Italy.

When these two sides met in December, it was a goal-filled thriller, with Atalanta coming out on top by a score of 3-2.

Can Verona Continue Impressive Home Form?

Ivan Juric’s side has struggled to put together results since play resumed after the pandemic, winning just twice in eight fixtures. On a positive note though, Verona has secured a point on three other occasions during that span against the likes of Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Sassuolo. They played a hard-fought match against Roma on Wednesday but Edin Dzeko’s winner at the halfway mark proved to be the difference-maker in a 2-1 defeat for Verona.

Currently, in ninth place, a Europa League spot isn’t completely out of the cards yet with five games remaining, but it’s going to take quite a run of form to catch sixth-place Napoli, who they trail by nine points. Of their remaining matches, Atalanta and Lazio pose the biggest threat, with Saturday’s fixture profiling to be a very tough task for the home side.

Atalanta Continue to Climb the Table

At one point before the restart, it seemed like a two-horse race for the Serie A title, with Juventus and Lazio battling it out. The latter’s form has taken a turn for the worst, while Atalanta has been extremely brilliant. They haven’t lost since league play returned in June, while absolutely thrashing some of their opponents. On Tuesday, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men beat Brescia 6-2, with Mario Pasalic bagging a hat trick.

Last weekend, they took away just a point against Juve in a 2-2 draw, but despite the result, they played a very solid match. Their trio of Luis Muriel, Duvan Zapata, and Josip Ilicic has been electric in the final third, accounting for 48 of the team’s 93 goals.

Atalanta is currently seven points behind Juventus, but after an Inter Milan victory on Thursday, they trail Antonio Conte’s squad by one point.  Considering Atalanta’s form though, it’s hard to imagine they won’t continue their dominance against Verona on Saturday. Juve has slipped up numerous times in the last couple of weeks and if they don’t smarten up, Gasperini’s side could have a legitimate shot at making the title race in Italy a very exciting one with just five matchdays left.

Although Verona has fared well on home soil, it’s going to be a daunting task stopping an Atalanta attack that has so many different weapons. Their eyes are set on contesting for a title with Juve and after winning 6-2 on Wednesday, Atalanta should continue this form on the weekend. I’m giving the visitors a two-goal victory while keeping the hosts off the scoresheet.

Pick: Atalanta  -1,-1.5 (-116)
