  • Where can we find betting value?

It is essentially the JV match in New York City tonight. The first women’s semifinal at the US Open features American Serena Williams, a 23-time major champ. After Serena and Elina Svitolina square off many fans will consider the Belinda Bencic vs. Bianca Andreescu semifinal the ‘right to finish the second’ match.

Not so fast.

Serena has lost in each of her last three major finals, and Bencic and Andreescu have earned their way to this point. Who will emerge? Let’s look at the latest odds and handicap the match.

Bianca Andreescu

Less than three months after her 19th birthday, the Canadian has far surpassed her previous best effort at a major. This is Andreescu’s ninth career major and the first time she has gotten past the third round. Playing in her third career US Open, Andreescu had not won a match in her first two tries.

While Andreescu’s bracket has not been unbearably tough, it was by no means easy. She earned straight set wins over Katie Volynets, Kirsten Flipkens, and Caroline Wozniacki, before needing three to get by Taylor Townsend, and coming from a set behind to beat Elise Mertens.

She has had a really good year winning Indian Wells and the Canadian Open, both on hard courts. That, and her play in New York, is the reason she is the favorite tonight.

Belinda Bencic

Playing in her first ever US Open in 2014, Bencic was a surprise quarterfinalist. Since then she was dropped in the third round in 2015 and 2016, failed to qualify in 2017, and lost her first match last year. In 18 career majors this is her longest run. This year she lost in the third round in the Aussie Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Half a decade ago she was the number one ranked junior player in the world.

Her first three matchups were a mixed bag this year in New York. Bencic beat Mandy Minella in straight sets, needed to rally in three to get by Alize Cornet, and earned a walkover victory against Anett Kontaveit. It was hard to see her 7-5, 6-4 victory over top-seeded and defending champion Naomi Osaka coming. Then, after a tiebreak first set win over Donna Vekic in the quarters, she rolled 6-3 to set up this semifinal opportunity.

Head-to-Head

This is the first-ever meeting between the two players but that doesn’t mean we can’t look a bit closer at the stats and tendencies as we consider who to select.

Betting the US Open Semifinals

While these may not be the sports’ biggest names, it isn’t hard to understand why they are at this point. Both are playing well, but particularly Andreescu. She has two significant tournament victories on hard courts this year, and is really hot right now. Her final tune-up for the US Open was the Rogers Cup in Canada.

Not only did she win, but she beat Kiki Bertens, Karolina Pliskova, and Serena Williams on the way to the trophy. Yes Serena retired, but Andreescu was up 3-1 when the white flag was raised. Play the hot hand. That is Andreescu.

Pick: Andreescu (-149)
