And just like that, we’re down to the final two players at the 2022 ATP Monte-Carlo Masters tournament. It’s no surprise that Tsitsipas is here competing in the last match, but Davidovich Fokina should be a surprise. The 22-year old wasn’t expected to make it to this point in the tournament, but he’s made a name for himself in Monte-Carlo this week.

Both players are coming off strong semifinal wins, which should make this an exciting semifinal match. The two are set to take the court tomorrow, April 17th at 8:30 am ET.

Davidovich Fokina’s Maiden ATP Tour Final

The 22-year old entered Monte-Carlo with a 4-9 record on the year, but he has turned heads here at the tournament. In the second round, he knocked off tournament favorite Novak Djokovic in three sets, and upset 10th seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.

His most recent match saw him up against veteran Grigor Dimitrov. After taking the first set fairly easily, Davidovich Fokina fell short in the second after holding a 5-3 lead, which forced a deciding set. He then managed to come back and take advantage of Dimitrov’s mistakes to win 6-4, 6(2)-7(7), 6-3, in just over two and a half hours.

If the Spaniard wins the title here, he is expected to break the Top 20 in the rankings for the first time in his career. The only person standing in his way is Tsitsipas.

The Defending Champion

The Greek star is one win away from defending his 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters trophy, and he has a pretty good track record against his final opponent.

Tsitsipas is still looking for his title of the season, and will look to capture it tomorrow. The World No. 5 took our second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets winning 6-4, 6-2. In a much different style match than his quarterfinal match against Diego Schwartzman that went three hours, Tsitsipas was concise and deliberant with every move he made against Zverev in just over an hour.

The 23-year old just didn’t give his opponent a chance at all from the start, and took advantage of any and every mistake the German made.

He’ll now take on Davidovich Fokina for the second time this year.

Third Meeting Between Davidovich Fokina and Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas currently holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Davidovich Fokina, with their most recent meeting happening earlier this year in Rotterdam. Tsitsipas went on to win that match in three sets. Their previous meeting came in 2021 on clay, but Davidovich Fokina retired, handing Tsitsipas the win.

Best bet

Despite how close these two players are in age, Tsitsipas brings quite a bit more experience to the match, and it could be used in his favor.

Davidovich Fokina has had a career-defining tournament that is sure help his rankings and confidence moving forward, but with the tournament Tsitsipas is having, it’s hard to think he’ll go three for three in his upsets this week.

Yes, the Spaniard upset Djokovic earlier, but Tsitsipas hasn’t taken a break from tour like the Serb did. Just because Tsitsipas hasn’t captured his first title of the year doesn’t mean he hasn’t been playing well. The Greek has had multiple quarterfinal showings, including a semifinal and final as well. Tsitsipas has been more consistent then Davidovich Fokina this year.

In terms of style of play, both players will provide powerful groundstrokes, and utilize their strength to win points, but all the advantages seems to be leaning towards the Greek star.

Instead of taking Tsitsipas on the moneyline at -460, take him to win in straight sets. It’s time for the 23-year old to add a title in 2022 to his resume.

Best Bet: Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-0 (-130)
