The Australian Open is officially down to the final four, and it will be a battle of the youngsters that will take center stage.

Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem are quickly proving that grand slams aren’t always about the usual suspects. Whenever a grand slam comes around, just about everyone turns their attention towards the big-name stars such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. It’s understandable, all three players after all, combine to have 55 grand slams.

After years of dominating the tennis scene, some of the younger players are fed up and ready to start their own run. Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem will meet up in the semifinals with a chance to punch their tickets to the finals. Both have been outstanding, but Thiem is being given the slight edge.

Alexander Zverev Is Coming Into His Own

Remember when Alexander Zverev was considered the next great player? At the age of 19, he soared to the fourth-highest player in the world.

He would stay around that ranking for a few years, but during the 2019 season, he would see himself drop down to number seven. For some reason, everyone jumped off his bandwagon.

Well, with the sort of performance he’s put on during the Australian Open, expect everyone to jump back on board.

Nothing was truly surprising about the way Zverev dispatched of Marco Cecchinato, Egor Gerasimov and Fernando Verdasco in straight sets. But once he got into the fourth round, he really began to open up a few eyes.

Andrey Rublev had spent the early portion of his 2020 season winning the first two tournaments of the year and going undefeated. A matchup with Zverev was considered a 50/50 matchup, but once it actually took place, it was anything but that.

Zverev swept him in straight sets and kept that momentum rolling into his matchup against Stan Wawrinka, taking him out in four sets.

Zverev has looked flat out incredible but Dominic Thiem has been even better.

Dominic Thiem Is Officially Elite

Dominic Thiem is always rated highly amongst his peers but he has always fallen short on the biggest of stages.

In a first round matchup against Adrian Mannarino, Thiem took care of business in straight sets. Thiem’s Australian Open run almost came to a crashing end as Alex Bolt won two of the first three sets before crumbling in the fifth.

Taylor Fritz gave him a few issues in the third round but that didn’t last long as he also fell at the hands of Thiem, but this time in four sets.

Thiem had his best performance yet with a straight sets win over Gael Monfils. At this point, Thiem was given a standing ovation and a pat on the back for what he had accomplished. He performed well up until this point but everything was over as he took on Rafael Nadal.

To the surprise of many, Thiem pulled off the upset. Defeating Nadal in four sets, three of which were tiebreakers, making it the first time that Nadal had lost three tiebreakers in any match.

Thiem is on fire, but can he continue his run against one of his younger opponent adversaries?

Thiem vs Zverev Head-to-Head

To say that both players are familiar with one another would be putting it mildly. With this being their ninth contest against one another, there won’t be anything new that they bring to the table to shock the other.

The head-to-head might be a bit one-sided in favor of Thiem. But that doesn’t mean anything when the stakes are this high.

Final Pick: Dominic Thiem

It’s difficult to make a pick in this one. Both players have been playing up to their potential and have the look of a true grand slam champion. Yet, Thiem does seem to have the slight edge. His road through this tournament hasn’t been as smooth as Zverev but he’ll use those experiences in his favor.

He looked flat out ridiculous against Rafael Nadal in his last match. If you can take down a player the caliber of Nadal on this stage, then there isn’t anybody that you can’t stand toe-to-toe with. Expect Thiem to book his trip to the finals.
