  • Angelique Kerber will face former US Open singles quarterfinalist Kristina Mladenovic in the first round
  • Kerber won the US Open in 2016, defeating Karolina Pliskova
  • Kerber drew alongside former No.1’s Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty

The US Open will take place from August 26th to September 8th in New York City, and is the last Grand Slam tournament of 2019. The WTA draw happened yesterday, on the 22nd, and it was anything but boring, drawing names like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova to face off in the first round.

Angelique Kerber was drawn with both Ashleigh Barty and Serena Williams in the fourth quarter, dramatically dropping her US Open Odds.

Weak Showing

Unfortunately Angelique Kerber has not had the summer I’m sure she planned. After parting ways with her coach in July, and stating that she will be taking her time in finding a new one, she hasn’t been on top of her game.

Earlier this month at the Rogers Cup in Toronto she lost in the first round to Daria Kasatkina after winning the first set 6-0. Just last week at the Western and Southern Open she lost again in the round of 64 against Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. No exactly the showing you want to put up leading up to the US Open.

US Open Champ?

The 2019 season has been anything by boring, it’s been historic. The first 18 tournaments were won by 18 different players. The Rogers Cup and the Cincinnati Masters, the two largest hard court events of the summer were won by players outside the top 15 at the time, in Bianca Andreescu and Madison Keys.

Many key players are going into the US Open with injury concerns, including defending champ Naomi Osaka, who is currently No. 1. As well as Serena Williams, who has withdrawn from the past two tournaments with back spasms, as she continues to chase her 24th major title.

Angelique Kerber has failed to win a match this summer, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to start heating up during the US Open. A darkhorse that could end up winning the tournament is Bianca Andreescu. She could see her idol Simona Halep in the round of 16, but if she’s able to get through her, she could go all the way.

Pick: Andreescu +1400
