  • Ashleigh Barty is the -330 favorite to defeat Barbora Krejcikova in their quarterfinal match at the WTA Western & Southern Open on Friday, August 20
  • Barty dismantled defending champion Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2 in third-round action
  • Krejcikova worked three sets to get past Garbine Muguruza

Ashleigh Barty is looking every bit like the #1 player in the world. That’s bad news for Barbora Krejcikova and anyone else who ends up standing in Barty’s way at the WTA Western & Southern Open.

Krejcikova is next up for Barty in Friday’s quarterfinals. The reigning French Open champion defeated Garbina Muguruza in three sets in third-round action.

Meanwhile, Barty was dispatching defending Western & Southern Open champion Victoria Azarenka in their third-round match. The Aussie needed just 14 games to advance to the quarterfinals.

The world #1 is the -330 betting choice to defeat Krejcikova in their quarterfinal matchup.

Barty Works Fast

Barty put the pedal to the medal from the opening serve against Azarenka. She won the first 10 games of the match.

World #13 Azarenka, the #14 seed in the tournament, never stood a chance against the top-seeded Australian. The match was over in 71 minutes. It was the most lopsided defeat suffered by Azarenka during the past 14 years.

There have only been two prior matches in Azarenka’s career in which she has managed to win just two games. Both came in 2007 when she was 17 years old. She suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Romina Oprandi in the opening round of Amelia Island. Azarenka was also beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Karin Knapp in the first round of the French Open.

Barty fired 25 winners during the match. She broke Azarenka’s service five times. Azarenka never got to game point once during the first-set shutout.

Azarenka has only lost a set 6-0 nine times over her pro career. It hadn’t happened to her since 2018. The outcome marked the sixth 6-0 set Barty has won by in 2021.

Interestingly enough, two of the three players with more 6-0 set wins this season were clashing in the third round to see who’d get to play Barty – Krejcikova (seven) and WTA leader Muguruza (nine).

Czeching In

Krejcikova is among three Czech players who reached the quarterfinals in this Cincinnati-based tournament. Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova are also through to the final eight.

Krejcikova, the #9 seed, battled hard to overcome #8 seed Muguruza. She won a three-set marathon 6-1, 6-7(5-7), 6-2 that lasted two hours and 24 minutes. It avenged her earlier-season loss to Muguruza in the final at Dubai. At that point, Krejcikova wasn’t ranked in the top 50 in the world. Today, she is 10th in the WTA rankings.

The French Open champion recorded 14 aces and won 86% of her first-service points in overcoming two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza. Krejcikova was able to save all five of the break points she ended up facing.

It took her six match points before Krejcikova was able to finally overcome Muguruza.

Barty Holds Edge

This duo has only met once previously but it was recently and Barty was the winner. She downed Krejcikova 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 16 this year at Wimbledon. That was en route to her tournament title.

It’s taken Barty two hours and 57 minutes of playing time to get to the quarterfinals. At the same time, Krejcikova was grinding out five hours and 17 minutes on court to reach this stage. She’s played two tiebreakers through seven sets and one extra match. Barty was afforded a first-round bye.
