- Is he good enough to beat the “Big Three” at Wimbledon?
It’s been a year of youngsters on the rise on the men’s side in tennis, but can any of them break through? We saw Stefanos Tsitsipas challenge the elite players during the clay court season – even beating Rafael Nadal once – and now Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime is making similar noise during the grass court part of the calendar. Is he a good bet to win at Wimbledon?

Auger Aliassime is Having a Coming Out Party
When you take a look at Auger Aliassime’s season as a whole, it’s not that impressive. He’s 26-14 on the year, which isn’t bad, but you have to take a closer look at what he’s done recently. He started 9-7. Since then, he’s 17-7 and is 10-3 in his last 13 matches.
One of the reasons he’s getting a lot of attention is he’s looked very crisp in the Wimbledon warmups. He made it to the semifinals at the Queen’s Club tournament and played in the finals at Stuttgart. He’s just 18 years old, so he’s clearly having a coming out party. The future of tennis in Canada is bright.
Some Concern With His Wins
Yes, he’s 10-3 in his last 13 matches and while that’s very good for a young player who had minimal expectations this season, but he hasn’t exactly beaten a who’s who of the top players. He beat Tsitsipas in straight sets in London, which is impressive, and he beat Nick Kyrgios, but he also lost to Feliciano Lopez and Matteo Berrettini in the final in Stuttgart.
And if you look and see a win over Milos Raonic among the list, don’t get too excited. Raonic was actually a walkover as he pulled out with a back injury.
How Should You Bet Auger Aliassime?
I’m not going to fall for the same mistake I made with Tsitsipas. He looked great during the clay court part of the season and I thought he’d genuinely have a chance to win the French Open. While he made a nice run, he was never really a serious threat.
I see the same thing from Auger Aliassime. He’s surprised a lot of people and he’s now in the Top 7 according to the latest Wimbledon odds. At the same time, I’m not betting him to win outright. I would bet him in certain spots and certain matchups, but it would be one of the biggest upsets in sports if he was to win Wimbledon.
I’m concerned with the fact that he’ll get schooled by guys like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. I’m not even sure he can beat players like Marin Cilic, Kevin Anderson, or Raonic. The only reason he’s in the Top 7 is because there’s really very few players who can challenge the “Big Three”.
At this point, I would pass on his odds to win it all. It’s just not a wise investment.
