In what is expected to be a tight match, 16-year old American Gauff, will take on 23-year old Bencic in the semifinals at the Adelaide International on Friday morning at 3:00 AM ET for us in North America.

Gauff enters the final four, having gone through the qualifying draw, and her five wins this week has given her her first WTA 500 semifinal appearance.

Bencic entered the tournament within the top five best odds to win the tournament outright with +1100. Gauff on the other hand wasn’t even mentioned within the top 20.

Gauff is Determined

Four out of the five matches the American has played this week have gone to three sets. Three of those four matches, Gauff fought back to win after losing the first set.

These long matches have showcased the 16-years physical strength and endurance, and her come from behind wins have demonstrated her unbelievable mental strength at such a young age.

In her quarterfinal match against fellow American, Shelby Rogers, Gauff showed us all a very strong come from behind win, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, including rallying back from a break down in the second and third set. The young star never stopped fighting.

Bencic’s Smooth Sailing

In comparison to her semifinal opponent, the 23-year has cruised through her tournament. Being the second seed, she obviously didn’t need to go through the qualifying rounds, and she was actually awarded a first-round bye. So Gauff has five matches under her belt this tournament, Benic has two.

But her first two matches have been lights out. She defeated Misaki Doi in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-3, and in the quarterfinals, beat, Storm Sanders 6-2, 6-4. After a disappointing Australian Open showing, Bencic needed a couple of wins to regain her confidence.

Head-to-Head

This is a first time match between these two players, and it’s expected to be close. The fact that Bencic has yet to really be challenged this tournament, and Gauff has been day in and day out, could play a factor into this match in particular.

As I mentioned above, the longer matches have tested Gauff, and you could argue that she might be more prepared to go the distance here, but she might also be more exhausted. Yes, Bencic has more overall experience, she’s the higher ranked, and seeded player, but Gauff has been a dark house this tournament, really showcasing her strengths.

Bencic is a very solid baseline player, and Gauff has really worked on her footwork and serve. Many has spoken about the element of surprise in Gauff’s game. With a couple years under her belt, and advance scouting, this is now a thing of the past. Gauff has to be ready for her opponents to know every inch of her game.

But it might be Gauff’s ability to adapt to her opponent’s play so easily this tournament that could give her the edge. She’s showcased versatility, going towards the net against Rogers, using the entire court. She’s been making smart moves in every match she’s played.

It’s one of those things that even if the 16-year old goes down a set, or has to come from behind, you can’t count her out. Especially from what we’ve seen this tournament. But the wins are sure to give her confidence heading into this match.
