  • Teen sensation Cori “Coco” Gauff is a +322 underdog vs former world #1 Simona Halep in Wimbledon’s Round of 16
  • Halep just blasted two-time Australian Open-champ Victoria Azarenka in straight sets
  • The Romanian is the -382 chalk to win the match

Is Simona Halep about to deliver Cori “Coco” Gauff her Wimbledon Waterloo?

The sportsbooks are strongly on board with that opinion.

One sportsbook has made 15-year-old sensation Gauff a decisive -322 underdog to win her Round of 16 match against former world #1 and 2018 French Open champion Halep.

The sportsbook is anticipating that the Romanian star will make short work of the 15-year-old Gauff, setting the total games for the match at 20. They effectively predict a 6-4, 6-4 straight-sets win for the #7 seed.

Halep Is Hot

Billed as match of the day, pitting two Grand Slam champions and former top-ranked players in the world against each other, Halep took the drama out of her showdown with Victoria Azarenka. She won easily 6-3, 6-1, requiring just 66 minutes to complete her mission.

Down 3-1 in the first set, the Romanian found another gear and rattled off wins in six successive games. Halep closed equally as powerfully, capturing the last four games of the match and 16 of the final 21 points. Two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka committed 33 unforced errors.

A Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2014, Halep has dropped just one set through three rounds. She’s won 18 of her last 24 games.

Gauff Barely Gets By

Facing world #60 Polona Hercog of Slovenia in her Round of 32 match, Gauff, amazingly now fourth in the 2019 Wimbledon odds, came perilously close to packing up and going home.

She lost the first set to Hercog, 6-3. In the second set, Gauff, ranked 313th by the WTA, twice staved off match point. At one stage, Gauff trailed 5-2 in the second set.

She then won a heart-pounding 32-stroke point to take the second set 7-6 (7-5). Gauff completed the rally with a 7-5 third-set victory.

Do You Believe In Magic?

The Lovin’ Spoonful did. Oddsmakers don’t.

The line on a match is never set based on fairy-tale runs. It’s drawn up based on diligent research into the data that will impact the upcoming contest. And every fact in this matter points to Halep taking out Gauff.

Halep just destroyed a former world #1 and two-time Grand Slam champion who was, herself, playing quality tennis. Seeking to emulate fellow American Jennifer Capriati, who reached the 1991 Wimbledon semifinals at the age of 15, Gauff required three sets to get past unseeded Hercog, who’s ranked 60th in the world.

Halep and Gauff have never faced each other. They haven’t even hit balls together at any point in time.

Last week, Halep met Hercog in the Round of 16 at the Eastbourne International. She won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

On the grass courts at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, Gauff has served notice that she is the future of women’s tennis. On Monday, Halep will serve up a reminder to Gauff that the future has yet to arrive.
