Swiatek Continues to Defend Title

The 21-year old’s route to defending her title got a little easier in the quarterfinal when she received a pass to the next round when Belinda Bencic withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue.

She opened up her tournament against American Danielle Collins, where she went on to win without a fight, winning 6-0, 6-1. She came out strong in her first match since the Aussie Open, and managed to secure the first set in just 21 minutes. She didn’t let Collins gain any sort of momentum or get into a rhythm.

The Pole recorded eight winners with six unforced errors, and managed to break her opponents serve five times, while not facing a break point.

Kudermetova Defeats Gauff

It took just over two hours, but eighth seed Kudermetova booked her spot in the semifinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over fourth seed Guaff.

The 25-year old put on a solid show, playing strong aggressive tennis from the beginning. The conditions weren’t ideal during their match, as there was a lot of wind that inevitably affected how the ball was moving. But Kudermetova managed to keep control for most of the match, hitting 18 winners to 18 unforced errors. Gauff ended the match with 23 unforced errors, with the majority coming in the first and third sets.

Kudermetova now has her work cut out for her against Swiatek. The Russian has yet to find success against her, having not captured a set.

Third Meeting

This will be the third career meeting between Swiatek and Kudermetova. They first met in the early rounds of the US Open in 2020, and most recently at Indian Wells in 2021. Swiatek won both of those meetings in straight sets, to lead a 2-0 head-to-head record.

Swiatek vs Kudermetova Pick

This should be a good match, but Swiatek is still the well deserved favorite. A few things about this tournament in particular that will favor her, is time spent on the court. Since her quarterfinal match resulted in a walkover, she’s actually only played one match this tournament so far. Whereas Kudermetova has a total of three, with two of the three going the full three sets.

Overall, Swiatek is the better player here, and with how she’s playing there’s no reason why she won’t move onto the finals.

Best Bet: Swiatek 2-0 (-160)
