Martic No Match for Swiatek

Swiatek was a -2500 favorite going into her quarterfinals against No. 27 seed Petra Martic. And in the end, it played out exactly that way.

Martic has a varied game with a slice backhand she uses fairly regularly. And so on clay and on grass, she’s a far more formidable opponent than on hard court.

But not Wednesday; the Croat got just three games.

Swiatek won all but one of the points on Martic’s second serve. And you could almost see it coming in her previous match against Ekaterina Alexandrova. There was no joy in winning visible on the Polish’s star’s face, only annoyance at her own level. With a day to reset, she came out with a vengeance.

Kudermetova Reversing So-So Season

The 26-year-old Russian  started the season fairly well in the two opening Adelaide tournaments. But then – with the notable exception of a semifinal in Doha – she went 3-7 in the rest of her tournaments heading into Madrid.

Unseeded in Stuttgart, which had almost all the top players, she bowed out to No. 5 seed Coco Gauff in a third-set tiebreak in the first round.

But Kudermetova has been top 10. And she has shown she has the level to beat most players on the day. So it wasn’t a shock to see her get through Stuttgart semifinalist Anastasia Potapova in a battle (6-3 in the third set), and No. 8 seed Daria Kasatkina (in a third-set tiebreak) earlier this week.

Most impressive was her three-set win over Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals Wednesday, despite dropping the second set 6-0. She had Pegula visibly frustrated. And her level was generally high.

Kudermetova Has No Answers for Swiatek

Kudermetova’s problem now is how to find a solution against a player who has mopped the court with her in their three previous meetings.

All of those have come on hard courts, although only one has come in the last year and a half. So Swiatek won those first two before she was even Swiatek.

On clay, Swiatek has two French Open women’s singles trophies in her cabinet. She has lost just seven matches on the dirt in 59 career attempts at the pro level.

That is daunting.

Or Kudermetova might have discovered the secret this week: beer.

The Russian moves quite well, although the matching wraps on her upper thighs during the Pegula match might give a little pause.

But she doesn’t necessarily have the weapons to counter the chess game Swiatek plays on clay – the superior defence that will almost always force Kudermetova to hit one more shot. And given her risk level, that gives her one more chance to miss.

Every point. Rinse. Repeat.
