Swiatek’s First Madrid Quarterfinal

There aren’t many first that still happen in Swiatek’s career, but earlier on Monday, she earned a spot in her first Mutua Madrid Open quarterfinal, when she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova.

In just under two and a half hours, Swiatek managed to secure the 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3 win over the 16th seed. The match ended up finishing after 1am local time in Madrid.

Despite not having competed in the quarterfinals in Madrid prior to this year, the Pole has played here. In 2021 she lost in the round of 16 to then World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, and last year she sat the tournament out, despite her historic winning streak.

The 21-year old like the clay though. Since the beginning of 2020, Swiatek has gone on to win 44 clay-court matches, and has now reached the quarterfinals of 8 consecutive clay courts tournament.

Martic Upsets Barbora Krejcikova

Martic defeated 11th seed Krejcikova in straight sets earlier on Monday, winning 6-3, 7(7)-6(1), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

En route to the win, she managed to outplay her opponent in key times during the match. Krejcikova actually served better, hitting sixes aces, and recording an 85 win percentage when landing her first serves, but that didn’t give her the momentum she needed.

We see again that Krejcikova does have the ability to defeat Top 20 players, but she can be a bit hot and cold. Does she have what it takes to take one from Swiatek?

Second Career Meeting

These two know each other, but they’re not that familiar with one another. Their one and only match came back in the early rounds of 2021 Indian Wells, where Swiatek took the match in two sets.

Swiatek vs Martic Prediction

As mentioned, Martic can be a bit hot and cold. Last year, she managed to win every single match she faced against a Top 20 player. This year has been a bit slower for the 32-year old. Consistency has been a bit of an issue for her. And against a player like Swiatek, you can’t make any mistakes.

This seems to be Swiatek’s match to lose. The Pole hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down or struggle. Yes, she had a match go the distance, but because of that expect her to come out hot on Wednesday, and look to end this match quickly. Because of that and how both players have been playing as of late, look for Swiatek to take the match in straight sets.

Best Bet: Swiatek 2-0 (-800)
