Leylah Fernandez and Amanda Anisimova are two of the young stars of the WTA and they will be clashing on court in the women’s singles Round of 16 at the French Open.

Both have proven to be giant killers en route to this stage of the tournament. Canadian Fernandez, 19, ousted 2021 Olympic Belinda Bencic in third-round play. American Anisimova, 20, toppled former world #1 Naomi Osaka in the opening round of the event.

Anisimova is being set as a -230 favorite over Fernandez on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Fernandez won the only previous meeting between the two players when an injury forced Anisimova to retire during their Round of 64 match earlier this year at Indian Wells.

Fernandez Wins Marathon Match

It took two hours and 49 minutes for Fernandez to overcome Bencic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. It’s the second time in three Grand Slam events that the Canadian teenager has made it through to the second week. She reached the final of the 2021 US Open.

World #14 Bencic is Fernandez’s second victory this season over a top-20 opponent. Fernandez saved two set points to win the first set. She also rebounded from an early service break in the third set.

The 2019 Roland Garros junior champion, Fernandez also allowed 18 winners by Bencic in the second set and committed eight double faults during the match.

Anisimova Keeps On Keeping On

The French Open is the second Grand Slam event of the season and Anisimova is a second-week participant for the second time. She also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. It’s the American’s fourth time playing in Week 2 at a Grand Slam tournament.

Anisimova won her third-round match when opponent Karolina Muchova was forced to retire due to an ankle injury. The American was leading 7-6(7), 2-6, 3-0 at the time.

Anisimova is through to the second week of the French Open for the second time. She reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2019.

Fernandez vs Anisimova Prediction

On paper, there’s little to choose between these two young talents. Both own two WTA singles titles. Fernandez has played in four finals, while Anisimova has advanced three times to play for a title.

Anisimova is holding a slight advantage in match wins (127-121) and in career earnings $3.1 million-$2.6 million).

Two areas where Anisimova holds the decisive advantage is in service aces this season (90-36) and perhaps most signficantly of all, in clay-court success.

This season,  Anisimova has reached the semifinals of a clay-court event in Charleston and the quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome, two WTA 1000 clay tournaments.

Look for Anisimova to win a close match that should be going the full three sets. At -230, playing Anisimova in the moneyline won’t be all that rewarding. The best play is to go with the over 20.5 games at -125.

Perhaps even take under consideration a same-game parlay of Anisimova in the moneyline, the over on the games and Anisimova to win 2-1 at +310.  Bet $10 on that three-leg play and the payout would be $95.89 if it comes in.

Pick: Over 20.5 games -120; Anisimova 2-1 (+310)
