The Cincinnati Masters, also known as the Western & Southern Open has hit it’s halfway mark with the third round for men’s singles play getting underway on Thursday. Fifth seed Berrettini, who received a bye in the first round, will be taking on 12th seed  Auger-Aliassime.

The World No. 8 Berrettini is the slight favorite heading into the match, but with both men having to piece together a comeback in their Round of 32 match, don’t expect this to be an easy win for either player.

Take a look at the odds below, and a preview of what we can expect.

Berrettini the Favorite

It’s no surprise that the Italian is entering this match as the favorite. The fifth seed, and World. No 8 has now won 15 of his past 17 matches, and is coming off a final appearance at Wimbledon. His match on Tuesday was his first match played since that final appearance, due to injury, so there was expected to be some rust there.

But after almost two and a half hours, the 25-year old found a way to advance, defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5.

This win was the first match win for Berrettini in Cincinnati. The Italian recorded 25 aces, which arguably won him the match, as he struggled to find his rhythm throughout.

But all that matters is he recorded the win, and he’s looking onto the next. Again, it wasn’t expected for Berrettini to come out in the exact same form he was in in London, but with every match, he’s that much closer to that form that has brought him a 33-7 record on the season.

Auger-Aliassime Continues to Advance

After a straight set win over his first round opponent, Marco Fucsovics, the 21-year old Canadian saw himself down a set early to Karen Khachanov in the second round. The match came two years after losing a three-set battle to Khachanov in Montreal. The young Canadian had a big task in front of him, as the Russian had been playing great tennis over the past couple of weeks. Coming off a silver medal in Tokyo, and winning the first set, it looked like Khachanov had the match.

Auger-Aliassime went on to hit 39 winners, with 14 aces, but only managed to convert three of his 13 breakpoints. But that showed to be enough to beat Khachanov, winning 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 in just under three hours. With the win, Auger-Aliassime evened out their head-to-head record to 1-1.

He’ll now look to continue his success as he takes on Berrettini in the third round.

Head-to-Head

Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime recently saw each other in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Prior to that, the two faced off in the finals of Stuttgart in 2019. The Italian has won both of their previous meetings, leading their head-to-head 2-0.

Best Bet

These two playing each other should make for an interesting third round match. Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime are actually really good friends, and know each other and their style of play really well.

Berrettini having to piece together a comeback and not have the smoothest opening round match, gives the Canadian the opportunity to come in a steal a set or even the match. Auger-Aliassime has yet to been able to find a way to win against Berrettini, but with the 25-year old just trying to find his rhythm again, it could be his time.

Both players’ serves should be on display on Thursday. They both possess a very strong accurate serve that usually provides them with the opportunity to win a point. In order for Auger-Aliassime to capture a win here, he’ll have to figure out a way to convert more than three breakpoints, if given the opportunity. Against an opponent like Berrettini, only recording three of 13, won’t be enough to win.

We’ll have to see how Berrettini comes out and plays. I think we’ll be able to tell fairly early on if he’s the one who’s controlling the pace of the match. Given the circumstances, and their history, expect the match to go the distance.

Best Bet: Ov 2.5 sets (+145)
