We’re down to the final four in London, as Novak Djokovic and Denis Shapovalov make up the first of two semifinals that will be played on Friday.
Djokovic is coming off another straight set win over his quarterfinal opponent Marton Fucsovics. The World No. 1 has only dropped one set all tournament. Shapovalov, on the other hand, is coming off a five-set battle that he had to rally back after going down two sets to one.
It’s no surprise the Djokovic is entering this match as the heavy favorite.

Djokovic Continues to Dominate
The five-time Wimbledon champion has found himself in the semifinals once again after recording his 100th grass court win of his career on Wednesday. It took just over two hours, but Djokovic was able to defeat his quarterfinal opponent, Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to become one step closer to capturing his 20th Grand Slam crown.
The 34-year old started off very strong in the match, winning the first five games, all while losing only seven points. From there, Fucsovics was able to gain a little momentum, turning 5-0 into 5-3. But that was as far as the World No. 1 was going to allow, as he converted his sixth set point to secure the first set win. Fucsovics was able to even it out in the second at 4-4, but once again, Djokovic was able to close it out.
With the win, the Serb improved his head-to-head record against Fucsovics to 3-0. He’ll now look to take on 10th seed and World No. 12, Shapovalov, who is having himself a very impressive run here at Wimbledon.
Shapovalov’s First Grand Slam Semifinal
He had to rally back, hit 59 winners, and play for almost three and a half hours, but Shapovalov earned himself a spot in his first career Grand Slam semifinal.
The 10th seed started off strong, winning the first set, to then see the next two get away from him. All of a sudden he was down two to one. The 22-year old was able to fight back to secure the win and defeat Karen Khachanov 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Shapovalov continued to rely heavily on his serve as he knocked out 17 aces on route to his win.
The Canadian had only won one main draw match at Wimbledon before this year’s tournament. I don’t think many expected him to be here in the semifinals. He’ll now look forward to taking on Djokovic, which will of course be his toughest match of the tournament.

Djokovic and Shapovalov have gone head-to-head a total of six times before, and the Serb leads their head-to-head record 6-0. Their last meeting came just earlier this year at the ATP Cup where Djokovic won 7-5, 7-5. Over their six previous matches, they’ve competed on outdoor and indoor hard courts, and outdoor clay courts, but never grass.

Best Bet
Djokovic has been the favorite to win the tournament since the start. He’s looking to defend his 2019 title, and many have said that we haven’t even seen his best tennis yet. Which is hard to believe, when he’s played near perfect over the course of the past five matches.
Shapovalov will be looking to rely on his serve and very powerful forehand as he enters the match as the underdog.
As phenomenal as Shapovalov has been playing this tournament, he’s still so young and compared to Djokovic, inexperienced at a Grand Slam. The 22-year old has still not completely figured out how to minimize unforced errors, which has caused him issues in the past.
It’s really hard to even think about betting against Djokovic in this match, especially at the level he’s playing at right now.
