Things are slowly getting back to normal in the tennis world.

Over in Lexington, Kentucky the women have picked up the pace as they battle it out at The Top Seed Open. We’re into the semifinals at this point and we’ve got an interesting matchup on one side of the bracket as Shelby Rogers is proving that her knee issues are a thing of the past.

Standing across the net from her will be a player who’s looked unbeatable in Jil Teichmann.

Rogers is the favorite, mostly for her work against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals. But did the bookies get this one right? Lets find out.

Jil Teichmann Proving She’s No Fluke

After a year in which she took home a pair of titles for the first time in her career, Teichmann checked all of the boxes in 2020. She’s strong enough to hit through her opponents and fast enough to get to balls that others can’t.

If there was one hole in the armor of the 23-year-old however, it would be her shortcomings on the hardcourts. She’s floated well below the .500 mark on that surface. But with three straight wins over Anna Kalinskaya, Yulia Putintseva and CiCi Bellis without dropping a set, it’s clear that Teichmann has used her quarantine period to work on a few things.

With win after win under her belt without breaking a sweat, Teichmann’s game will need to be raised when she takes on Shelby Rogers.

Shelby Rogers is Looking Like Shelby Rogers

How quick did we forget about Shelby Rogers? As her current form might indicate, far too soon.

Injuries derailed the former world number 58 and saw her plummet to a ridiculous 630. Her current ranking at 116 is a huge improvement but it doesn’t quite tell the story of how good she is right now. Her opponents however, can fill you in on how dominant she’s been as of late.

After Rogers’ first and second round beat downs over Misaki Doi and Leylah Fernandez, she was supposed to pack her bags and head home as she took on Serena Williams in the quarter finals.

The first set went exactly as expected as she was broken on multiple occasions. Yet, somehow, someway, she rallied back and punched her semifinal ticket.

Both women have done a helluva job getting this far, but let’s see how they stack up against one another.

How They Matchup

Between Shelby Rogers injury history and Jil Teichmann’s age, it really isn’t a surprise that they haven’t faced off against one another yet. Their form at the moment is similar but Rogers has a few things working in her favor.

Final Pick: Shelby Rogers

It’s impossible to pick against Jil Teichmann. She hasn’t come close to losing a single set, let alone a match, and she’s the higher ranked player. With that being said, Rogers is the pick here.

Everyone seems to forget that Rogers was on a roll before injuries slowed her down. If her performance against 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams was any indication, then it appears she’s better than ever. Take her to win in a close three-set matchup.
