  • Novak Djokovic is the defending champion at Wimbledon
  • Djokovic has won three straight Grand Slams
  • Alex Zverev is just 13-8 on the season; Milos Raonic is 11-6

The tennis season is heating up as we’ve got the 2019 French Open right around the corner and then Wimbledon will follow suit shortly after.

BookMaker has posted an interesting prop that pits two stalwarts – Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer – against the field. Is it best to bet on them or their competition?

Federer is Fading

One of the main reasons I’m not a huge fan of this prop is that Federer is a bit of a throw-in. Yes, he’ll always be a sentimental favorite at Wimbledon and truth be told, he has a shot to win it. However, he’s past his prime and he needs to catch a lot of breaks to make that happen.

He made it to the quarters of Wimbledon last year but keep in mind that he only played one ranked player – No. 22 Adrian Mannarino – before getting there. He ended up losing to No. 8 Kevin Anderson in the quarters. Federer also didn’t make it past the fourth round at the 2018 U.S. Open or the 2019 Australian Open, so he’s not trending in the right direction.

Is it possible that if Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and others are knocked out that things will line up for Federer? Yes. Is it likely? Not really. That’s why this prop really sets up as a “do you think Novak Djokovic wins” type of prop more than this tandem versus the field.

Djokovic Player to Beat

There’s no question that the player to beat at Wimbledon will be Djokovic. Not only has he won three Grand Slams in a row, the field has gotten significantly weaker over the last year.

To start, Federer has faded as he’s now 37 years old. He’s in the twilight of his career and isn’t as dominant as he once was. Rafael Nadal is usually a step behind Djokovic on grass anyways but he’s been banged up. He’s laboring through the clay court season. Andy Murray has been off the scene and there aren’t any youngsters that are consistently dominating.

There are guys like Alex Zverev and Milos Raonic, who will be in the 20/1 range, but Zverev has no titles this year and is 13-8 overall. Is that who you want to bet on? As for Raonic, he’s 11-6 on the year but has just one win against a player who was ranked in a tournament (Zverev). Do you really want to back him?

As for veterans like Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro, Cilic is 4-6 on the year while del Potro has barely played any matches (2-1). These are not guys you can confidently bet.

Bet On Djokovic

If you really think that Federer is worth the throw-in, then it’s worth betting on Djokovic and Federer versus the field. Personally, this tournament is mostly just a Djokovic or nothing bet, so I would rather bet on him alone and get better odds than tie in Federer.
